Life should be good.  However, everyone encounters stressors or other circumstances that cause the bad times to stick around, sometimes without an end in sight.  Jacob believes that everyone deserves to find happiness and purpose within their lives and he makes it his mission to help those looking for direction.  Feeling “stuck” can be very overwhelming and often a fresh set of eyes can help identify one’s own negative patterns of thought, actions, and behaviors.  Jacob thrives on helping others identify their own negative patterns, then collaborating with his clients on the next steps while working to ensure the new and improved you sticks around.  Self-awareness is truly the key to improving yourself, your relationships, and your life.  Although anxiety, shame, sadness, and anger can cloud our minds, Jacob believes people deserve to be happy.

Working with Jacob is ideal for clients who want to be heard and given a voice in their treatment as Jacob takes a person-centered approach.  This means you will feel genuineness and trust within the counseling relationship, but will also have someone to give you those gentle nudges in a new direction and will help you remain accountable for the goals you set to improve your life.  The relationship between client and counselor can be very powerful and Jacob believes counseling is the right choice for everyone at some point – or multiple points – in their lives.  Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness, and is the first step to self-actualization – fulfilling one’s talents and potential.  Life will get better.

At Foundations Counseling, Jacob sees clients who seek counseling for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Adolescents and Teens – cutting/self-injury, self-esteem and self-worth issues, suicidal ideation, anxiety, depression, drugs and alcohol, school and family issues
  • Mental Health and Wellness – severe anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, stress, bipolar disorder, sexual and gender identity issues, trauma, abuse, grief and loss, addictions

Jacob has experience working with individuals, couples, adolescents, and families from his home state of Illinois.  Jacob has worked effectively with severe anxiety and obsessive- compulsive disorder utilizing exposure therapy, considered the “gold standard” intervention to address these issues.  Jacob also has invaluable experience addressing issues of low self-esteem/self-worth, self-injury (cutting), guilt, depression, and suicidality.  Often working with adolescents, Jacob utilized his person-centered approach to connect and encourage self-growth while modeling appropriate relationships and boundaries with which his clients then bring to future relationships.  Working as a counselor in the community, he has experience collaborating with court/probation, medical providers, teachers and school counselors, and other therapists and professionals to ensure the best care for his clients.

Jacob Wilson is a National Certified Counselor and he holds a Masters of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Northern Illinois.  He also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Jacob began his career as a crisis counselor outside of Champaign, IL, then worked with children and families within the foster care system, and most recently with adolescents, parents, and families in an intensive-outpatient setting.  Dr. Patrick McGrath’s trainings on exposure therapy have allowed Jacob to become highly effective in addressing severe anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Jacob has worked with people of all backgrounds and walks of life and prides himself on his ability to connect with his clients and adapt his counseling style to best serve them.
