How to Emotionally Connect with Your Partner

5 Steps to Emotional Intimacy with Your Partner

Happy relationships don't happen by accident; they require time, effort and patience. If you want to become closer to your partner, you will have to take steps to engage and inspire. Here are five things you can do today to emotionally connect with your partner or spouse.

Be more curious. At the beginning of relationships, we want to know everything about our partners. Over time, however, it's easy to lose interest, as we get caught up in the monotony of our everyday routines. Instead of going through the motions, make an honest attempt to better engage. Instead of mindlessly asking how your partner's day was, ask open-ended, thought-provoking questions that lead to conversation. When we demonstrate genuine interest in our partners, we create dialogue which enhances the relationship and promotes closeness.

Touch each other. The first sense we develop, touch is the secret weapon to countless happy relationships. Numerous studies have shown that touch has a powerful impact on our emotions and well-being. It also increases the release of oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which makes us feel emotionally connected to our partners. Whether it's a high-five, a kiss, hand-holding, hug or back massage, don't let a single day go by without touching your partner. Be present and attentive while you are touching, so you can get the most from the experience.

Unplug. These days, everyone seems to be connected to a phone, tablet, TV or laptop. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to cultivate closeness in a world of electronic overload. If you want to become emotionally connected to your partner, you will need to unplug. Set aside some time during the week to switch off your gadgets so you can talk, have dinner, cuddle or go for a walk.

Express gratitude. Research has shown that people tend to be much happier when they practice gratitude. In relationships, gratitude has the power to make us feel more valued and loved. It's easy to complain about your partner's foibles and bad habits, especially when they make you feel overburdened. That said, chances are your mate has contributed more to your happiness than anything else. Take every opportunity to express your appreciation for your partner. Be sure to point out specifics, especially if you want to encourage more of the same.

Make new memories. Most couples have fond memories of courtship when they went on dates and shared new experiences. As time drags on, relationships seem to be more about doing chores, raising children and making ends meet. Boredom and everyday routines can suck the energy out of any relationship. Many times, couples confuse this lack of intensity with a lack of intimacy. It can be helpful to create new rituals and try new things together. This could mean signing up for a class or going on a trip. It could also mean going for evening walks and discussing ideas for a future date night. Whatever the case, if you find yourself caught in a rut, try to think of some ways to infuse your routine with some fresh experiences that will become new memories for you and your partner.
