Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Flashbacks

Frequent and vivid recollections of traumatic events that feel as if they are happening again, causing intense distress and anxiety.

Nightmares

Consistent, distressing dreams related to the traumatic experience that disrupt regular sleep patterns and lead to fatigue.

Avoidance

Ongoing efforts to avoid reminders or triggers of the traumatic event, such as avoiding certain places, people, or situations.

Hyperarousal

Feeling constantly on edge, irritable, and easily startled, with a heightened sense of anxiety and vigilance.

Negative Changes in Mood

Experiencing persistent negative emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt, or shame, that interfere with daily life.

Social Withdrawal

Isolating oneself from friends and family, or experiencing difficulty in forming and maintaining relationships.

Memory and Concentration Problems

Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions due to intrusive thoughts and anxiety.

Physical Symptoms

Experiencing unexplained physical symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, or chronic pain, often related to stress and anxiety.

Substance Abuse

Turning to drugs or alcohol as a way to cope with emotional pain and distress stemming from the trauma.

Answers to Common Questions

What is PTSD counseling?

PTSD counseling is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals who have experienced traumatic events cope with and recover from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How do I know if I need PTSD counseling?

If you're experiencing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, or persistent anxiety related to a traumatic event, seeking counseling may be beneficial. A professional assessment can provide clarity.

What can I expect during a PTSD counseling session?

In counseling, you can expect a safe, supportive environment where you'll work with a trained therapist to address your trauma, explore your feelings, and develop coping strategies.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

What types of therapy are effective for PTSD?

Trauma focused talk therapies have the strongest research support for PTSD, including cognitive processing therapy, prolonged exposure and other forms of cognitive behavioral therapy. Foundations counselors who work with trauma use approaches such as CBT and gradual exposure work, paced so you stay in control. Ask about your counselor's approach during your free consultation so you know what to expect.

Can I receive PTSD counseling online or via teletherapy?

Yes. Foundations offers secure online sessions anywhere in Colorado, along with in person sessions in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor. Some people with PTSD find it easier to begin from home, where they feel safer and can control the room. Others prefer the office as a separate space for trauma work. You can start in either format and switch later if the other suits you better.

Is PTSD counseling confidential?

Yes. What you share about your trauma stays private, within limits Colorado law sets, such as an immediate risk of harm or suspected abuse of a child, which your counselor explains at the start. You decide how much detail to share and when. Because Foundations does not bill insurance, no diagnosis is sent to an insurer to pay for sessions.

Can PTSD counseling help with anger or drinking and drug use?

Yes. Anger, irritability and using alcohol or drugs to numb memories or get to sleep are common after trauma. PTSD counseling looks at what those reactions are protecting you from and builds other ways to calm your body and handle triggers. If substance use has become its own problem, your counselor may suggest adding drug and alcohol counseling alongside trauma work.

Do I have to describe my trauma in detail?

No, not right away and not before you are ready. Early sessions usually focus on safety, sleep and skills for handling triggers. Some trauma focused approaches do involve revisiting memories, but your counselor explains the plan first, paces it with you, and you can pause at any time. Feeling in control of the pace is part of healing.
