Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Recurrent Flashbacks or Nightmares

Experiencing vivid and distressing memories or dreams about the traumatic event, often feeling as though it's happening all over again.

Avoidance Behaviors

Deliberately avoiding people, places, activities, or thoughts that remind them of the trauma, which can significantly limit their life.

Hyperarousal or Hypervigilance

Remaining in a heightened state of alertness, often leading to anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and being easily startled or frightened.

Emotional Numbness or Detachment

Feeling disconnected from others or everyday life, struggling to experience or express emotions, often leading to a sense of isolation.

Intense Mood Swings or Irritability

Experiencing severe mood fluctuations, irritability, or anger, often disproportionate to the situation at hand.

Sleep Disturbances

Struggling with insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns, which can exacerbate other symptoms and impact overall health.

Difficulty Concentrating

Finding it hard to focus on tasks, work, or conversations, which can affect personal and professional life.

Self-Destructive or Risky Behavior

Engaging in harmful behaviors, such as substance abuse or reckless activities, as a way to cope or feel something.

Feelings of Guilt or Shame

Carrying an intense and persistent sense of guilt or shame, often related to the trauma or its aftermath.

Answers to Common Questions

What is trauma counseling?

Trauma counseling is a form of therapy specifically designed to help individuals process and recover from traumatic experiences. It involves various techniques to address the emotional, psychological, and physical effects of trauma.

How do I know if I need trauma counseling?

If you're experiencing symptoms like flashbacks, anxiety, avoidance behaviors, mood swings, or any distressing feelings related to a traumatic event, trauma counseling might be beneficial for you.

What types of trauma can be treated with counseling?

Trauma counseling can address a wide range of traumatic experiences, including but not limited to, physical or sexual assault, accidents, natural disasters, military combat, and emotional abuse.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can trauma therapy help with PTSD?

Yes, trauma therapy is often an essential part of treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), helping individuals manage symptoms and work through their traumatic experiences.

What are some common techniques used in trauma counseling?

Approaches vary by counselor, and the right fit depends on your history and goals. Common trauma informed methods include cognitive behavioral approaches for stuck thoughts, grounding and mindfulness skills for moments of overwhelm, and body focused techniques that notice how stress shows up physically. Ask your counselor which methods they use and why. A good plan builds safety and coping skills before going deeper into painful memories.

Can I receive trauma counseling online?

Yes. Foundations offers online counseling anywhere in Colorado, plus in person sessions in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor. Many people find trauma work easier from a familiar, safe place at home. Others prefer an office, where the session has a clear start and end. Think about privacy and what helps you feel settled afterward, and tell us your preference when you reach out.

What should I expect in my first trauma therapy session?

Your first session is mostly about getting to know each other and making sure you feel safe. Your counselor will ask what brings you in, how you are coping, and what you hope will change. You do not need to share the details of what happened. Together you will start a plan, often beginning with skills for sleep, stress and hard moments before working through painful memories.

Will I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

While discussing your trauma can be part of the healing process, therapists are trained to approach this sensitively. You won't be forced to share more than you're comfortable with, and the therapy will progress at a pace that feels right for you.

What if I am in crisis or thinking about hurting myself?

Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Foundations offers scheduled outpatient talk therapy, not crisis services, so please do not wait for a session or a returned message. Once you are safe, counseling can help you work through what led to that point.
