Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Preoccupation with Weight and Body Image

An overwhelming focus on body weight, shape, and appearance, often accompanied by constant mirror-checking or negative self-talk, may indicate the need for eating disorder therapy.

Extreme Dietary Restrictions

Following severely restricted diets, eliminating entire food groups, or expressing excessive fear of certain foods can signal disordered eating behaviors requiring professional intervention.

Binge Eating

Episodes of eating large amounts of food in short periods, often in secret, followed by feelings of shame or guilt, suggest binge eating disorder, a condition that benefits from specialized therapy.

Purging Behaviors

Engaging in purging behaviors such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas after eating points towards bulimia nervosa, which requires therapeutic intervention.

Excessive Exercise

Compulsively engaging in physical activity beyond everyday exercise routines, especially if missed workouts cause distress, maybe a symptom of an eating disorder that needs addressing through therapy.

Avoidance of Social Situations Involving Food

Consistently avoiding meals with friends or family or any social event involving food can indicate an unhealthy relationship with food that therapy can help correct.

Significant Weight Fluctuations

Experiencing dramatic weight loss or gain in a short period without an apparent medical reason can be a sign of an eating disorder, necessitating professional counseling.

Irregular Menstrual Cycles in Women

In females, missed periods or irregular menstrual cycles without another medical explanation can be a symptom of an eating disorder due to poor nutrition or excessive exercise.

Mood Swings and Irritability

Emotional instability, including irritability, depression, or anxiety around meal times, can suggest an underlying eating disorder that would benefit from therapy.

Answers to Common Questions

What are eating disorders?

Eating disorders are severe mental health conditions that involve disordered eating habits and a significant preoccupation with food, body weight, and shape. Common types include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder.

How do I know if I need eating disorder therapy?

If you're experiencing distressing thoughts about food and body image, engaging in harmful behaviors like binge eating or purging, or your eating habits are impacting your physical health and daily life, it might be time to seek therapy.

What can I expect from eating disorder therapy?

Therapy usually starts with understanding your relationship with food, body image and the feelings underneath. Your counselor helps you notice patterns, reduce harmful behaviors, and build other ways to cope with stress or emotion. Sessions are one on one, and family members can be involved when that helps. Your counselor may also suggest working alongside your physician and a dietitian.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can eating disorders be cured?

While eating disorders are complex and recovery can be challenging, many people successfully manage their symptoms and achieve lasting recovery through comprehensive treatment that includes therapy, medical care, and nutritional counseling.

How can I support a loved one with an eating disorder?

Offer compassionate support without judgment, encourage them to seek professional help, educate themselves about eating disorders, and be patient, understanding that recovery is a process.

What's the difference between dietitians and therapists for treating eating disorders?

A dietitian focuses on creating healthy eating plans and addressing nutritional deficiencies, while a therapist addresses the psychological aspects of eating disorders. Both are crucial for comprehensive treatment.

Can eating disorders affect men?

Yes, eating disorders can affect individuals of any gender, age, race, or background, although they're often stereotypically associated with women. Men with eating disorders may face unique challenges and stigma in seeking help.

How long does Eating Disorder Therapy Last?

Recovery from an eating disorder often takes longer than counseling for other concerns, commonly many months and sometimes a year or more. The pace depends on how long the patterns have been in place, your physical health, and the support around you. Your counselor will check progress with you regularly and talk honestly about whether a higher level of care is needed.

When is outpatient counseling not enough for an eating disorder?

Weekly talk therapy is not enough when there are medical risks such as fainting, a very low heart rate, rapid weight loss or frequent purging. In those cases see your physician right away, because a higher level of care with medical monitoring may be needed. Foundations provides outpatient talk therapy only. If you are thinking about suicide or self harm, call or text 988.
