Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Thoughts of Self-Harm or Suicide

Experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicidal ideation is a clear sign that professional help is needed. Women's counseling can provide a safe space to discuss these thoughts and offer support and strategies to cope.

Communication Breakdown

Persistent misunderstandings, lack of effective communication, or a complete breakdown in talking things through are key signs. Couples find themselves unable to express their needs or feelings without conflicts or silence.

Diminished Physical Intimacy

A noticeable decrease or absence of physical closeness, which is not attributed to medical reasons, can indicate deeper emotional disconnects that might benefit from professional guidance.

Frequent Arguments

If minor disagreements escalate into frequent, intense arguments over the same issues without resolution, it might be time to seek counseling. These recurring conflicts often mask deeper issues in the relationship.

Emotional Distance

Feeling emotionally disconnected, lonely, or detached from your partner, despite living together or spending time in each other's company, can signal a need for counseling.

Infidelity or Trust Issues

Whether it's dealing with the aftermath of infidelity or grappling with trust issues, counseling can provide a structured space to address these complex challenges.

Lack of Appreciation or Respect

Feeling undervalued or disrespected by your partner can erode the relationship's foundation. Counseling can help in rediscovering mutual respect and appreciation.

Unresolved Past Issues

Old wounds or unresolved issues that keep resurfacing can impede current relationship dynamics. Counseling can assist in effectively addressing and healing from past traumas.

Differing Visions for the Future

Struggling to align on key life decisions, like family planning, career moves, or lifestyle choices, can create significant stress in a relationship.

Answers to Common Questions

What is intimacy counseling?

Intimacy counseling is talk therapy for couples who feel emotionally or physically disconnected. A counselor helps you understand what is getting in the way, such as poor communication, resentment, broken trust, stress or mismatched desire, and gives you practical ways to rebuild closeness. Sessions happen in person in Fort Collins, Loveland or Windsor or online in Colorado, and they are conversations only, with nothing physical in the room.

What if my partner is reluctant to attend counseling?

That is common. Start by telling your partner what you hope will change, not what they are doing wrong, and suggest trying one session together. Many reluctant partners relax once they see the counselor will not take sides. If they still say no, you can begin on your own; working on your part of the pattern often shifts the relationship and can make joining later feel less threatening.

Will our counselor take sides?

No. In couples work the counselor's focus is the relationship, not either partner. That means helping each of you be heard, slowing down conversations that usually escalate, and naming patterns you both play a part in. A good counselor will sometimes challenge each of you, but evenly. If either of you feels the sessions are tilted, say so, and the Counselor Match Guarantee means you can ask for a new match.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

What kind of issues can be addressed in couples intimacy counseling?

Couples bring a wide range of concerns: feeling more like roommates than partners, arguments that go nowhere, rebuilding trust after an affair or betrayal, mismatched desire, sex that has become stressful or rare, and distance after a baby, an illness or a big life change. Counseling helps you understand the pattern underneath, so you can both work on it instead of blaming each other.

How do we know if we need intimacy counseling?

Common signs include the same fights repeating, avoiding hard topics to keep the peace, feeling lonely while together, touch or sex fading or feeling like a chore, or one of you quietly thinking about leaving. You do not have to wait for a crisis. Couples often say they wish they had started sooner, when patterns were easier to change and goodwill was easier to find.

Can intimacy counseling improve our sex life?

Often, yes. Desire and satisfaction are closely tied to how safe, connected and heard partners feel, so improving communication, trust and stress often improves sex too. Your counselor can also help you talk about needs and differences without shame. If a physical issue such as pain or erectile problems is involved, check with your physician as well, and see our sex therapy page for more focused support.

Is what we share in couples counseling confidential?

Yes, with the legal exceptions every counselor follows, such as a serious risk of harm. What you say stays between you and your counselor, and Foundations does not bill insurance, so no claim or diagnosis is filed. If one partner wants to share something privately, ask your counselor early how they handle that, since many couples counselors avoid holding secrets that would undermine the work.

Are there exercises or activities we can do outside of sessions?

Usually, yes. Many counselors suggest small practices between sessions, such as a weekly check in conversation, ways to repair after an argument, or gradual exercises that rebuild touch and closeness without pressure. These are agreed on together and fit your comfort level. Practicing at home is often where change happens, because it turns what you discuss in session into new habits as a couple.
