Depression Counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor

Feel like yourself again

When every day feels flat and heavy, asking for help can feel like one more impossible task. It does not have to be. For depression counseling, call 970.227.2770 or book online, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting is a free consultation.

What is depression counseling at Foundations?

Depression counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling helps adults and teens with low mood, seasonal depression and high functioning depression feel like themselves again, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness. The first meeting is a free consultation, and most new clients are seen within 48 hours.

What is the best kind of therapy for high functioning depression?

High functioning depression is not a formal diagnosis. It is a plain language way to describe going to work, caring for family and checking every box while feeling flat, exhausted or empty underneath. Because nothing looks wrong from the outside, many people wait years to ask for help.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) notes that depression treatment typically involves psychotherapy, medication, or both, and names CBT as an established talk therapy. At Foundations, counselors often combine approaches:

  • CBT: notices the harsh, perfectionist thoughts that keep you pushing and practices kinder, more accurate ones.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness: helps you stop fighting every feeling and reconnect with what matters to you.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): explores the inner critic and the parts of you that feel they can never slow down.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills: practical tools for strong emotions and stress when your reserves are low.

How do I know if it is depression or just the winter blues?

Many people in Northern Colorado feel lower when the days get short. The winter blues usually pass and do not stop you from living your life. According to NIMH, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression with a recurring seasonal pattern, with symptoms lasting about 4 to 5 months of the year, and it changes how a person feels, thinks and behaves.

NIMH explains that a depression diagnosis means symptoms are present most of the day, nearly every day, for at least 2 weeks. Signs worth taking seriously include losing interest in things you usually enjoy, sleeping much more or less, pulling away from people, and feeling hopeless or worthless. If that sounds familiar, a free consultation is a low pressure way to find out.

What kind of counseling helps with seasonal depression?

NIMH describes a version of CBT adapted for SAD (CBT-SAD) that helps people challenge unhelpful thoughts and add rewarding activities during the darker months. Foundations counselors use CBT based tools for seasonal depression, such as planning your week around light, movement and people, and catching the thoughts that make winter feel endless. Light therapy and medication are options to discuss with your physician, and your counselor can work alongside that care.

What happens in the first sessions?

It starts when you reach out and share what is going on. We match you with a counselor who fits, and your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. In the first sessions, your counselor asks about your mood, sleep, energy, stress and history, checks on safety, and helps you set two or three goals. Many people also leave with one small, doable step for the week ahead.

Who will I work with?

Several Foundations counselors list depression as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the first match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

When is counseling not enough on its own?

Counseling is not emergency care. If you are thinking about suicide or are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7, or call 911. Foundations counselors do not prescribe or give advice about medication, so questions about antidepressants, light boxes or changing a dose belong with your physician or psychiatrist. If your lows alternate with periods of unusually high energy, ask about bipolar disorder therapy.

HOW WE WORK WITH DEPRESSION

Your counselor will look at your mood, sleep, energy and stress, then build a plan with you. Methods our counselors use for depression include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): changes the harsh thoughts and habits that keep low mood going.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness: makes room for hard feelings and moves you toward what matters.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): works with the inner critic behind high functioning depression.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Persistent Sadness or Depression

If you often feel down, hopeless, or melancholic, it could be a sign of depression. Counseling can help you identify the root of these feelings and provide strategies to manage them.

Difficulty Concentrating

Struggling to focus on tasks at work or at home can be a symptom of various mental health issues. Counseling can help you identify the causes and provide strategies to improve concentration.

Unexplained Physical Symptoms

Experiencing physical symptoms like headaches or stomach aches without a clear medical cause could be stress-related. Counseling can help identify stressors and reduce psychosomatic symptoms.

Sleep Problems

Difficulty in maintaining regular sleep patterns, such as suffering from insomnia during a manic phase or oversleeping during a depressive phase, often requires therapeutic intervention to develop better sleep habits.

Loss of Interest in Activities

Once enjoyable activities no longer bring pleasure or interest, leading to withdrawal from hobbies, social events, or other engagements.

Changes in Appetite or Weight

Significant weight loss or gain due to a decrease or increase in appetite, which is not related to dieting.

Fatigue or Loss of Energy

Feeling persistently tired or drained, even after adequate rest, leading to a noticeable decrease in activity levels and productivity.

Feelings of Worthlessness or Excessive Guilt

Harboring negative views about oneself, feeling an exaggerated sense of guilt over past events, or experiencing feelings of worthlessness.

Thoughts of Death or Suicide

Having recurring thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, or attempts at self-harm, which is a serious symptom indicating immediate need for professional help.

Answers to Common Questions

What happens in my first depression counseling session?

Your first meeting is a free consultation with the counselor Foundations matched you with after you reached out. You talk about what depression feels like for you right now, such as sleep, energy, motivation or hopelessness, and what you want to be different. Your counselor explains how they work, often with CBT or mindfulness based approaches, and you decide together whether to keep going.

Is everything I say in depression counseling confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a key component of therapy. Information shared in sessions is kept private, with few legal exceptions such as imminent harm to yourself or others.

Can depression counseling help with anxiety too?

Yes, many counselors are trained to help with a range of mental health issues, including anxiety. It's common for individuals with depression to experience anxiety as well.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can I do depression counseling online?

Yes. Foundations offers online counseling for adults anywhere in Colorado, as well as in person sessions in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor. Online sessions can help on days when low energy makes leaving the house hard, or during winter weather. Many clients mix both formats, and you can ask about options when you reach out.

What should I do if I am having thoughts of suicide?

If you are in danger or thinking about ending your life, call or text 988 now to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Foundations offers scheduled outpatient talk therapy, not crisis services. Once you are safe, counseling can help with the hopelessness and pain behind those thoughts, and you can talk about them openly with your counselor.

Do I need medication for depression, or is counseling enough?

That is a question for your physician or psychiatrist, since Foundations counselors do not prescribe or advise on medication. NIMH notes that depression treatment typically involves psychotherapy, medication, or both. Many people start with counseling, and your counselor can coordinate with your doctor with your permission if you are also exploring medication.

How long does depression counseling usually take?

It depends on what you are facing and your goals. Some people come for a focused stretch of weekly sessions to get through a hard season, while others stay longer to work on patterns that go back years. Your counselor will check progress with you along the way, and you decide together when to space sessions out or stop.

What can I do on days I am too depressed to get out of bed?

Start very small: sit up, drink water, open the blinds, and choose one easy task. Aim for movement, daylight and a little contact with someone you trust, without judging how much you get done. If these days keep repeating, talk to a counselor. If you have thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 any time.

Can depression counseling help teens?

Yes. Depression in teens can look like irritability, pulling away from friends, falling grades or sleeping much more than usual, not only sadness. Foundations counselors who work with adolescents use approaches like CBT and DBT skills and involve parents where it helps. Our child and teen counseling page has more on how that works.
