What is individual counseling at Foundations?

Individual counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling is one on one therapy for adults dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, grief or a hard life change, using approaches such as CBT, DBT, IFS and ACT. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

How do I choose an in person therapist instead of an app?

Apps and subscription platforms are built for convenience. An in person therapist is built for continuity: the same licensed counselor, in the same room, every week, who remembers your story. If face to face matters to you, look for three things. First, a licensed counselor with experience in what you are facing. Second, an approach they can explain in plain words. Third, fit. The National Institute of Mental Health puts it simply: rapport and trust are essential, and it is important that you feel comfortable with your therapist.

Foundations sees clients in person at four offices in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor, and also offers online counseling anywhere in Colorado when a week gets hard to travel. For a side by side look at in person practices and app based therapy, see alternatives to BetterHelp for in person therapy.

Where do I start if I feel overwhelmed or anxious?

You do not need a diagnosis or the right words to start. Many adults reach out after months of feeling on edge, tired, flat or stretched thin. That is worth taking seriously: the NIMH notes that for people with an anxiety disorder, anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time. Start by telling us what a hard day looks like. We will help you sort out what to focus on first.

If one concern stands out, these pages go deeper: anxiety therapy, depression counseling, trauma therapy and grief counseling.

How does counselor matching work?

When you call 970.227.2770 or reach out online, our team asks what brings you in, what you want to change, and practical details like office, schedule and whether you prefer in person or online. We use that to match you with a counselor whose training fits your concern. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation, a chance to make sure the fit feels right before you begin. Most new clients have that first appointment within 48 hours.

What do the first sessions look like?

Sessions usually last 50 minutes, and longer sessions are available. In the first session, your counselor asks about your history, what is happening now, and what you want to be different. Together you set two or three goals. Over the next few sessions, you start practicing tools that fit those goals, and you check in on whether the work is helping. Most people start weekly and adjust as things improve.

What approaches do Foundations counselors use?

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): noticing the thoughts that feed anxiety or low mood and practicing new responses.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): skills for strong emotions, distress and relationships.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): understanding the parts of you that pull in different directions.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness: making room for hard feelings while you act on what matters to you.
  • Trauma focused therapy and Christian counseling: for clients who want them.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors work with adults one on one, and each has their own specialties. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out and we will match you. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the first match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means you can meet with another counselor until you find the right fit.

When is individual counseling not enough on its own?

Weekly counseling is not an emergency service. If you are thinking about suicide or are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Counselors do not prescribe medication, so if you want to explore it, talk with your physician. Your counselor can coordinate with them if you ask.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Persistent Sadness or Depression

If you often feel down, hopeless, or melancholic, it could be a sign of depression. Counseling can help you identify the root of these feelings and provide strategies to manage them.

Anxiety & Stress Management

While anxiety is natural, excessive worry or fear can feel overwhelming. Individual counseling can teach you valuable coping skills to ease your mind.

Irritability or Uncontrollable Anger

If you frequently feel anger that is intense or hard to control, it can strain your personal and professional relationships. Counseling can offer ways to manage your anger and understand its sources.

Social Withdrawal

Avoiding friends, family, or activities you once loved? Counseling can help you uncover the reasons behind this behavior and reconnect with your passions.

Changes in Sleeping or Eating Patterns

Significant changes in sleep habits or eating patterns can be a sign of mental health concerns. Counselors help you explore these changes and suggest interventions if needed.

Feelings of Worthlessness or Guilt

Persistent thoughts of inadequacy or overwhelming guilt may point to underlying mental health issues. Therapy provides a path to healing.

Difficulty Concentrating

Struggling to focus on tasks at work or at home can be a symptom of various mental health issues. Counseling can help you identify the causes and provide strategies to improve concentration.

Substance Abuse

Using drugs or alcohol to cope with emotions or to feel normal can indicate deeper issues that might benefit from counseling.

Life & Career Changes

Facing significant transitions? Counseling offers the support you need to navigate uncertainty and embrace new opportunities.

Relationship Challenges

Conflict, communication breakdowns, or emotional distance can put a strain on the strongest relationships. Individual counseling helps you navigate challenges in your relationship dynamics.

Trauma & PTSD

Experiencing or re-experiencing traumatic events through flashbacks or nightmares can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Counseling is crucial for trauma recovery.

Grief & Loss

The loss of a loved one can leave you feeling overwhelmed and adrift. Counseling provides a compassionate space to process your grief, honor your emotions, and begin to find healing and meaning after loss.

Answers to Common Questions

How many sessions of individual counseling will I need?

It depends on what you want to change. Some adults come for a handful of sessions to work through one specific problem, and others stay longer to address patterns that built up over years. Your counselor will set goals with you in the first session and check in regularly on whether the work is helping, so you can decide together when to slow down or finish.

What should I ask a therapist before booking?

Ask what license they hold, what experience they have with your concern, how they usually treat it, how you will know it is working, and what happens if you are not a good fit. At Foundations, your free consultation with your matched counselor covers these questions, and the Counselor Match Guarantee means you can meet another counselor if the first match does not feel right.

Can I switch between in person and online sessions?

Yes. Many Foundations clients meet in person at an office in Fort Collins, Loveland or Windsor and use online counseling for weeks when travel, illness or schedules get in the way. Online sessions are available anywhere in Colorado. Ask your counselor how they handle a mix, since keeping the same counselor matters more than the format.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Is what I say in individual counseling confidential?

Yes, with a few legal limits. Your counselor keeps what you share private and will explain the limits at the start: for example, if there is a serious risk that you or someone else will be harmed, if a child or vulnerable adult is being abused, or if a court orders records. Because Foundations is private pay, no diagnosis is shared with an insurance company unless you ask for documentation.

Can individual counseling help with relationship problems if my partner will not come?

Yes. Working one on one, you can understand your part of the pattern, get clear on what you want, and practice new ways to respond. When one person changes how they show up, the relationship often shifts too. If your partner becomes open to it later, Foundations also offers couples counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor.

Can my counselor prescribe medication?

No. Foundations counselors provide talk therapy and do not prescribe or advise on medication. If you think medication might help with anxiety, depression or sleep, talk with your primary care physician or a psychiatrist, who can prescribe and manage it. Many people do both. If you already work with a doctor, let your counselor know so your care fits together.
