Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Decreased Athletic Performance

A sudden or gradual decline in sports performance, where skills and abilities that were once second nature become challenging, can indicate a need for sports performance counseling.

Increased Anxiety or Nervousness

Experiencing heightened anxiety or nervousness before, during, or after sports events, often manifesting as physical symptoms like shaking, rapid heartbeat, or nausea, may signal the need for counseling.

Difficulty Concentrating

Trouble focusing during training or competitions, leading to mistakes or decreased performance, can be a sign that sports performance counseling might be beneficial.

Loss of Motivation or Passion

A noticeable decrease in enthusiasm or drive for the sport, which used to bring joy and fulfillment, might suggest the need for professional support.

Persistent Negative Thoughts

If an athlete is consistently bogged down by negative self-talk, doubts about their abilities, or pessimistic views about their sports performance, counseling can help.

Excessive Fear of Failure

An overwhelming fear of disappointing others, making mistakes, or not meeting expectations, to the point where it hampers performance, can be alleviated through sports performance counseling.

Mood Swings or Irritability

Uncharacteristic mood changes, especially related to sports activities, practices, or thoughts about performance, can indicate underlying issues that counseling might address.

Difficulty Managing Stress

If stress related to sports is becoming unmanageable or affecting other areas of life, this is a clear sign that sports performance counseling could be beneficial.

Issues with Team Dynamics

Struggling to connect or communicate effectively with teammates or coaches, leading to isolation or conflict, may be improved with the help of a sports counselor.

Answers to Common Questions

What is sports performance counseling?

Sports performance counseling is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on enhancing an athlete's mental and emotional well-being to improve their overall sports performance. It addresses issues like anxiety, focus, motivation, and stress management specific to athletic contexts.

What issues are commonly addressed in sports performance counseling?

Common issues include performance anxiety, lack of motivation, stress management, team communication problems, fear of failure, burnout, and coping with injury-related stress.

Will my coach or team know I am in counseling?

No. Foundations is an independent private practice, not connected to any team, school or club. What you share stays between you and your counselor, with legal exceptions such as an immediate risk of harm. Nothing goes to a coach, trainer or athletic department without your written consent. Your counselor will explain the limits of confidentiality in your first session.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can sports performance counseling help with injury recovery?

Yes, it can play a significant role in the psychological aspect of recovery, helping athletes cope with the stress and frustration associated with injuries and aiding in their mental and emotional recovery process.

Do I need to be a professional athlete to benefit from sports performance counseling?

No. Athletes at every level come in, from high school and college competitors to weekend runners, climbers and adult league players. If pressure, nerves, a slump or an injury is getting in the way of a sport you care about, counseling can help. Sessions are in person in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor, or online anywhere in Colorado.

Can sports performance counseling improve team dynamics?

Yes, it can help athletes develop better communication skills, enhance teamwork, and resolve conflicts, leading to improved team dynamics.

Is sports performance counseling only for dealing with problems?

While it's often sought out for problem-solving, it's also used proactively to strengthen mental skills, prevent burnout, and enhance overall well-being in a sporting context.

How do I know if sports performance counseling is right for me?

If you're facing challenges related to your sports performance or if you want to proactively improve your mental skills for athletic endeavors, counseling could be beneficial. A consultation with a sports counselor can help determine if it's the right fit for your needs.

Is a sports performance counselor the same as a sports psychologist?

Not exactly. Sports psychologists usually hold a doctoral degree in psychology. Foundations counselors are licensed counselors who work on the mental side of sport through talk therapy: performance anxiety, confidence, focus, burnout and injury setbacks. For many athletes that is what they need. Ask about each counselor's experience with athletes when you reach out so we can match you well.
