What is autism counseling at Foundations?

Autism counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling is talk therapy for autistic children, teens and adults, and their families. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What does autism counseling help with?

The National Institute of Mental Health describes autism as a neurological and developmental condition that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn and behave. Counseling does not try to change who someone is. It focuses on the things that make life harder: anxiety, shutdowns after a long day, friendships and dating, school or work stress, low mood, and feeling misunderstood. Many people come in with a second concern too, such as anxiety or ADHD, and counseling can address both together.

Is this an autism diagnosis or ABA therapy?

No. Foundations offers counseling and emotional support, not autism evaluations and not applied behavior analysis (ABA). If you are looking for a formal diagnosis, ask your physician or pediatrician for a referral to a provider who does developmental or psychological evaluations. Many people start counseling while they wait for an evaluation, or after a diagnosis when they want help making sense of it. A counselor can talk with you about what you are noticing without promising a diagnosis.

What does a session look like?

Sessions are one on one, usually 50 minutes, and your counselor will ask what works for you. That might mean clear agendas, written notes, breaks, fewer surprises, or a quieter approach to eye contact and small talk. Some Foundations counselors use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) skills adapted for autistic clients, practical problem solving, and work on sensory needs and routines. For younger children, play based approaches can help; see child and teen therapy.

Can parents and families be part of counseling?

Yes. Parents often want help understanding their child, handling meltdowns with less conflict, and taking care of themselves. Partners and siblings sometimes want a place to talk too. Family therapy can help a household find routines and ways of talking that work for everyone. The CDC notes that the abilities of autistic people can vary significantly, so the plan is built around your family rather than a script.

Who will I work with?

Counselors who work with autism are shown in the team section on this page. Some work with children, and some work with teens and adults only, so tell us the age of the person coming in when you reach out. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, share what you need, and we will match you with a counselor. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the fit is not right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado, which some autistic clients find easier.

What this page does not cover

Foundations does not provide autism diagnostic evaluations, ABA, speech or occupational therapy, medication, or school testing. Your physician can help with referrals for those. Counseling here is outpatient talk therapy, not emergency care. If you or someone you love is in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. For immediate danger, call 911. For community connection and resources, the Autism Society is a good place to look.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Exhausted From Masking

Do you spend the day copying expressions, rehearsing small talk and hiding what feels natural? Keeping that up can leave you drained by evening.

Overwhelmed by Senses

Lights, noise, textures or crowds can push you past your limit quickly. Shutdowns or meltdowns afterward are not a choice, and they can be hard for others to understand.

Feeling Misunderstood

People take your words the wrong way or miss what you mean. Being misread again and again can make you want to stop trying to connect.

Anxiety About Change

A new routine, a canceled plan or an unexpected visitor can throw off your whole day. Uncertainty often brings worry that is hard to settle.

Friendships and Dating Feel Confusing

Unwritten social rules can make friendships and dating feel like guesswork. You may want closer relationships and not be sure how to build them.

Burnout That Will Not Lift

After a long stretch of stress or change, you feel deeply tired and things you usually manage feel out of reach. Rest does not seem to be enough.

Struggles at School or Work

Group projects, open offices, shifting expectations or unclear instructions can make school or work far harder than it needs to be.

Making Sense of Who You Are

Have you recently recognized yourself in descriptions of autism, or learned something new about your child? Counseling offers room to explore what that means for you and your family.

Parenting Through Hard Moments

Meltdowns, school stress and daily routines can leave parents worn out and unsure what helps. You want to understand your child and keep the peace at home.

Answers to Common Questions

Can adults who were never diagnosed come to autism counseling?

Yes. Many adults reach out because they recognize themselves in autism descriptions and want to understand their history, relationships or burnout. A counselor can explore that with you and help with the stress you are carrying now. Counseling is not a diagnostic evaluation, so if you want a formal assessment, ask your physician for a referral to a provider who does adult evaluations.

What is autistic burnout, and can counseling help?

Autistic burnout is a term many autistic adults use for deep exhaustion after a long stretch of masking, sensory overload or constant change. People describe losing skills they usually have and needing much more rest. Counseling can help you notice early signs, reduce demands where possible, and plan recovery time. If exhaustion comes with thoughts of suicide, call or text 988.

Will my counselor try to make me act less autistic?

No. The goal is not to train anyone to look neurotypical. Counseling at Foundations focuses on what you want to change, such as anxiety, conflict at home, or feeling drained after work, and respects stims, special interests and different ways of communicating. You set the goals, and your counselor helps you reach them in a way that feels sustainable.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

How do I help my autistic teen who refuses therapy?

Start by asking what feels hard about it. Some teens dislike talking face to face, new places, or feeling like something is wrong with them. Online sessions, a clear agenda, or starting with a topic they care about can help. Parents can also begin counseling on their own to get support and ideas while the door stays open for their teen.

Can autism counseling be done online?

Yes. Foundations offers secure online sessions anywhere in Colorado, which many autistic clients prefer because home avoids bright lights, waiting rooms and travel. You can talk with your counselor about what makes video easier for you, such as planned breaks or sending notes ahead. In person sessions are available in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor if you prefer meeting face to face.
