What is dreamwork counseling at Foundations?

Dreamwork counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling uses the dreams you remember, including recurring dreams and nightmares, as a starting point for talking about feelings, stress and relationships in your waking life. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What is dreamwork in counseling?

Dreamwork is a way of exploring dreams inside ordinary talk therapy. Instead of looking up what a symbol "means," you and your counselor look at your own dream: what happened, how it felt, what it reminded you of, and why it might be showing up now. The dream becomes a doorway into conversations that can be hard to start directly, such as fear, grief, anger or a decision you keep putting off.

Do dreams really mean something?

It is honest to say no one fully knows. Cleveland Clinic notes that there is no consistent, scientifically proven theory linking specific dream content to what a dream means, while also noting that dreams might help people process and manage emotions. Dreamwork at Foundations does not claim to decode hidden messages or predict the future. It treats a dream as personal material, like a journal entry your mind wrote overnight, and asks what is useful in it for you. You are the expert on your dream, and your counselor helps you be curious about it.

What happens in a dreamwork session?

A session might start with you describing a dream in as much detail as you remember. Your counselor may then ask questions like:

  • What was the strongest feeling in the dream, and where else in your life do you feel that?
  • Who or what showed up, and what do they bring to mind?
  • If you could change the ending, what would you want to happen?
  • Has this dream, or something like it, come back before?

From there, the conversation usually moves into your waking life. Some people keep a simple dream journal between sessions so details are not lost by morning.

Can counseling help with nightmares?

Often, yes. Nightmares can be upsetting on their own, and repeated nightmares after a frightening experience can wear down sleep and daytime mood. The National Center for PTSD describes imagery rehearsal therapy, also called nightmare re-scripting, in which a person chooses a recurring nightmare and changes its content to make it less intense or distressing. Counselors who work with dreams may draw on ideas like this alongside trauma counseling or PTSD counseling. If nightmares come with poor sleep overall, sleep focused counseling may also help.

Who will I work with?

Several Foundations counselors list dreamwork as part of how they work. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out by calling 970.227.2770 or booking online, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will help you find another Foundations counselor.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What does dreamwork at Foundations not cover?

Dreamwork here is talk therapy. It is not fortune telling, spiritual readings or sleep medicine. If you have loud snoring, gasping at night, acting out dreams physically, or severe daytime sleepiness, talk with your doctor, since those can point to medical sleep problems. If you are thinking about suicide or are in emotional distress, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Recurring Dreams

Having the same dream, or the same kind of dream, again and again, and wondering why it keeps returning and what it might be connected to in your waking life.

Nightmares That Linger

Waking up shaken, with fear or dread that follows you into the day, making it harder to focus, rest or look forward to going to sleep at night.

Dreams You Cannot Shake

A vivid dream that stays with you for hours or days, stirring up feelings you did not expect and leaving you curious about what it might be pointing toward.

Feelings That Are Hard to Name

Do you sense something is bothering you but struggle to put it into words? Sometimes a dream offers an easier way into what is hard to say directly.

Old Memories Showing Up at Night

Dreams about people, places or times from your past, such as a childhood home or someone who has died, that bring old feelings back to the surface.

Restless, Unsettled Sleep

Waking often or feeling like you never fully rest because your dreams are so busy, intense or emotional, and wondering how much stress is following you to bed.

Grief in Your Dreams

Dreaming about someone you have lost can bring comfort, longing or fresh pain. Talking about those dreams can be a gentle way to process grief.

Stuck on a Decision

Are you circling a choice you keep putting off? Dreams sometimes reflect the worry, pressure or hope underneath, and exploring them can bring some clarity to waking life.

Curious About Your Inner Life

Wanting to understand yourself more deeply and wondering what your dreams might say about your fears, hopes and relationships, without relying on a dream dictionary's fixed answers.

Answers to Common Questions

What if I rarely remember my dreams?

You can still benefit. Many people remember more once they start paying attention, for example by keeping a notebook by the bed and jotting down anything, even a single image or feeling, right after waking. A fragment is enough to work with. If dreams stay out of reach, your counselor will simply focus on other parts of your life instead.

Is dreamwork based on Freud or Jung?

Dream exploration has a long history in counseling, and some approaches draw on ideas from Freud, Jung and later therapists. Most dreamwork today is more practical and less about fixed theories. At Foundations, the focus is on what your dream means to you, not on applying one school of thought. Ask your counselor which ideas shape the way they work.

Will my counselor tell me what my dream means?

Not usually. A dream dictionary approach assigns fixed meanings to symbols, but the same image can mean very different things to different people. Your counselor will ask questions and offer possibilities, and you decide what fits. Often the most helpful insight comes from the feeling in the dream rather than the details of the story.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can children or teens do dreamwork?

Dreams and nightmares are common topics for young people, and talking about them can be a gentle way to express worries. Whether dreamwork is a good fit depends on the child's age and what is going on. When you reach out, share your child's age and concerns, and we will match you with a counselor who works with that age group.
