What is counseling for older adults at Foundations?

Counseling for older adults in Fort Collins and Loveland at Foundations Counseling is one on one talk therapy for people in their sixties and beyond facing retirement, loss, health changes, loneliness or caregiving. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What do older adults come to counseling for?

Later life brings changes that can arrive faster than anyone can absorb them. People come in after retiring and losing the structure and identity work gave them, after the death of a spouse or close friends, when a new diagnosis changes what the future looks like, or when they find themselves caring for a partner whose health is failing. Others come in for things that have followed them for decades: old regrets, a strained relationship with an adult child, or anxiety that has gotten louder with time. Some simply want a place to make sense of the life they have lived.

Is feeling down just part of getting older?

No. The National Institute on Aging states that depression is not a normal part of aging, and that depression, even severe depression, can be treated, including with talk therapy that helps a person identify and change troubling emotions, thoughts and behaviors. In older adults depression can look less like sadness and more like low energy, irritability, poor sleep, withdrawing from people, or losing interest in things that used to matter. A counselor can help you sort out what is going on, and depression and anxiety are both areas Foundations works with every day.

How does loneliness affect health later in life?

Loneliness is more than an uncomfortable feeling. The National Institute on Aging notes that loneliness and social isolation are associated with higher risks for health problems such as heart disease, depression and cognitive decline. Retirement, moving, losing a driver's license, hearing loss or the death of friends can shrink a social world quickly. Counseling can help you name what has been lost, work through the reluctance many people feel about reaching out, and take small, practical steps toward connection that fit your life and energy.

Can counseling help with grief, illness and end of life?

Yes. Some Foundations counselors who work with older adults also work with terminal illness and the end of life. Counseling can make room for grief after a spouse or friend dies, for the fear and sadness that come with a serious diagnosis, and for conversations that are hard to have with family: what matters most to you now, what you want people to know, and how you want to spend the time you have. You do not have to have it all figured out to start.

What about caring for an aging spouse or parent?

Caregiving can be an act of love and still be exhausting, isolating and full of mixed feelings. Spouses caring for a partner and adult children caring for a parent often put their own needs last until something gives. Counseling offers a place to talk about guilt, resentment, grief for the person who is changing, and how to ask for and accept help. Adult children and their parents can also come in together through family counseling when decisions about care are straining the family.

Who will I work with?

A small group of Foundations counselors list aging adults among the people they work with. You can meet them in the team section on this page. When you reach out, tell us a little about what is going on, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the fit is not right, the Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find you another counselor.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast) and Loveland, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado, which can help if driving or mobility is a challenge.

What this page does not cover

If you or someone you love is thinking about suicide, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy. We do not provide memory or dementia testing, cognitive or capacity evaluations, in home care or medication management. If you are worried about memory changes or new confusion, start with your physician, who can check for medical causes and refer you for testing.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Lost Without the Work Routine

Retirement can take away the structure, purpose and identity work gave you, leaving long days that feel empty instead of free.

Grieving a Spouse or Friends

The death of a partner or close friends can leave a quiet house and a heavy heart, and grief may arrive again and again as losses add up.

A Shrinking Social World

Moving, giving up driving, hearing loss or friends passing away can leave you more alone than you ever expected to be.

Health Changes That Feel Scary

Has a new health problem changed what the future looks like? Fear, sadness and frustration are natural when your body no longer cooperates.

Caring for an Ill Partner

Looking after a spouse whose health is failing can be exhausting and lonely, and you may feel you have no room left for your own needs.

Low Energy and Lost Interest

Feeling tired, irritable or uninterested in things that used to matter is not just part of getting older, and it deserves attention and care.

Old Regrets Resurfacing

With more quiet time, memories of choices you wish you had made differently can return and weigh on you more than they did before.

Tension With Adult Children

A strained or distant relationship with a grown son or daughter can be painful, especially when you want closeness during this season of life.

Making Sense of Your Life

Do you find yourself reflecting on the life you have lived and what still matters? Counseling offers a place to explore meaning, legacy and what comes next.

Answers to Common Questions

I have never been to counseling. Is it too late to start?

No. Plenty of people try counseling for the first time in their sixties, seventies or later, and many find it easier than they expected. There is no test to pass and no need to dig into your whole history unless you want to. Sessions are a conversation with someone trained to listen, at a pace that works for you.

Can a family member help set up counseling for a parent?

Yes. An adult child or spouse can call 970.227.2770 or book online to get things started, as long as the person who will attend wants to come. Counseling works best when it is the client's choice. What is said in sessions stays private unless your parent gives written permission to share it, with the usual legal exceptions for safety.

Can counseling help with adjusting to retirement?

Yes. Retirement can bring freedom and also a surprising loss of identity, routine and daily contact with people. Some couples find being home together all day harder than they expected. Counseling helps you grieve what work gave you, figure out what you want this chapter to hold, and build a week that has meaning and connection in it.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Are online sessions a good option for older adults?

For many people, yes, especially when driving, weather or mobility make getting to an office hard. Online sessions work on a computer, tablet or smartphone, and your counselor can help you get comfortable with the technology. Some people prefer in person sessions at our Fort Collins or Loveland offices, and that is welcome too.

Can counseling help if I am worried about memory changes?

Counseling can help with the worry, grief and adjustment that memory changes bring, for you or for a spouse. It cannot assess or diagnose memory problems, so start with your physician, who can check for treatable causes and refer you for testing if needed. Once you know more, a counselor can help you plan, talk with family and keep doing what matters to you.
