What is porn and sex addiction counseling at Foundations?

Porn and sex addiction counseling in Loveland at Foundations Counseling, and online anywhere in Colorado, is judgment free talk therapy for adults whose porn use or sexual behavior feels out of control. Counselors help you understand triggers and manage urges. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

Is sex addiction a real diagnosis?

The label is debated. "Sex addiction" and "porn addiction" are common phrases, but many clinicians prefer the term compulsive sexual behavior. Cleveland Clinic notes that compulsive sexual behavior disorder is not listed in the DSM-5, yet providers widely agree it is a real and treatable mental health condition. At Foundations the label matters less than your experience: if sexual urges or porn use feel out of control and are causing distress, that is reason enough to talk with someone.

How do I know if my porn use is a problem?

Watching porn is not automatically a problem, and counseling is not about moral judgment. Mayo Clinic describes compulsive sexual behavior as an intense focus on sexual fantasies, urges or behaviors that cannot be controlled, and says it is likely a concern when the behavior becomes a constant focus, is hard to control, causes problems, or harms you or others. People often notice failed attempts to cut back, secrecy, lost time, strain at work, or a partner who feels hurt and shut out.

What happens in counseling?

Your counselor starts by listening, without shaming, to what is happening and what you want to change. Together you look at triggers and patterns, such as stress, loneliness, boredom or old hurts, and build skills to handle urges and strong feelings in healthier ways. Some Foundations counselors draw on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) ideas for this. You set the goal, whether that is stopping completely, cutting back, or understanding the behavior first. Foundations offers one on one counseling; community recovery groups exist separately if you want peer support too.

Can counseling help my relationship?

Often, yes. Secrecy and broken promises hurt trust, and partners usually need their own support. Individual counseling can be a first step, and if trust has been broken by an affair, affair recovery therapy may also help. For concerns about desire, intimacy or sexual functioning that are not about compulsive behavior, see our sex therapy page. If alcohol or drugs are part of the pattern, substance use counseling can be woven in.

Who will I work with?

A smaller number of Foundations counselors offer this work. When you reach out by calling 970.227.2770 or booking online, tell us what you need and we will match you with one of them. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the fit is not right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will help you find another counselor. In person sessions are at our Loveland office, and online counseling is available anywhere in Colorado, which many people prefer for privacy.

What this page does not cover

Foundations provides outpatient talk therapy. We do not prescribe medication; ask your physician if you want to discuss that. We do not provide court ordered sex offense evaluations or treatment, and anyone with concerns about harming others or about illegal content should seek specialized help right away. Counseling is not emergency care. If shame or hopelessness ever leads to thoughts of suicide, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. For immediate danger, call 911.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Feeling Out of Control

You have promised yourself to cut back, and the urge wins anyway. Each attempt that falls apart leaves you more frustrated and less sure you can change.

Living With Secrecy

Hiding browser history, guarding your phone or keeping a separate life takes energy. The secrecy can feel heavier than the behavior itself.

Shame After Acting Out

Relief is quickly followed by guilt, disgust or self criticism. That shame can feed the next round, making the pattern hard to break.

Lost Time and Focus

Hours slip away late at night or during the workday. You may notice sleep, work or responsibilities suffering because of how much time it takes.

Hurting Your Partner

Has a partner found out, or do you fear they will? Broken trust and hurt feelings can leave both of you unsure where to begin.

Using It to Cope

Stress, loneliness, boredom or old pain seem to set off the urge. It works as an escape for a moment, and then the original feelings return.

Needing More to Feel Something

What used to feel exciting no longer does, and you find yourself searching longer or for more intense content. That shift can be confusing and worrying.

Conflict With Your Values

Your behavior does not match what you believe or who you want to be. Counseling offers a judgment free place to sort through that gap without added shame.

Afraid to Talk About It

You have never said this out loud to anyone. Starting is hard, and a counselor can listen without judgment and help you decide what you want to change.

Answers to Common Questions

Is everything I say about my sexual behavior confidential?

Yes, with a few legal exceptions your counselor will explain at the start, such as a serious risk of harm to yourself or others or a report of child abuse. Otherwise what you share stays between you and your counselor. Because Foundations is private pay, nothing is sent to an insurance company, which many clients value when the topic feels sensitive.

My partner found out about my porn use. Should we start with couples counseling?

Often it helps to start individually so you can understand the behavior and stabilize first, while your partner gets their own support. Couples sessions can come later, once both of you are ready to talk about trust without the conversation turning into a fight. Your counselor can help you decide on timing that protects both of you.

Does porn addiction counseling have to mean quitting completely?

Not necessarily. You decide the goal. Some people want to stop entirely, some want to cut back or change how they use porn, and some first want to understand why it has taken over. Your counselor helps you weigh what matters to you, including your values, your relationship and your health, and builds a plan that fits.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can counseling help if my faith makes me feel ashamed about sex?

Yes. Shame often keeps compulsive patterns going, so counseling works to lower it rather than add to it. Your counselor will respect your values and help you sort out what you believe from what you fear. If faith matters to you, say so when you reach out so we can find a counselor who fits.

Can I do porn or sex addiction counseling online?

Yes. Foundations offers online counseling anywhere in Colorado, and in person sessions at our Loveland office. Some people find it easier to start this conversation from a private space at home. Your counselor will help you make sure you have a private, comfortable setting for sessions. Tell us your preference when you reach out and we will factor it into your match.
