What is relinquishment and adoption counseling at Foundations?

Relinquishment and adoption counseling in Fort Collins and Loveland at Foundations Counseling supports birth parents considering or living after placing a child for adoption, adoptees, and adoptive families, using talk therapy for grief, identity and family questions. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

Foundations is a counseling practice, not an adoption agency or a law firm. We have no stake in any decision you make, and counselors do not give legal advice.

What is relinquishment?

Relinquishment is when a birth parent places a child for adoption and gives up parental rights. People use the word for the decision itself and for the loss that can follow it, felt by the birth parent and, in a different way, by the adoptee. Adoption can hold love, relief and grief all at once. Counseling makes room for every part of that, without asking you to pick one feeling.

How can counseling help birth parents?

Whether you are pregnant and weighing options, recently placed a baby, or placed a child years ago, counseling gives you a space that belongs only to you. The Child Welfare Information Gateway notes that grief and loss are common reactions for birth parents who make an adoption plan, that strong grief and regret may surface many years after an adoption is final, and that it matters to find a counselor who can guide you in an unbiased way. Your counselor can help with:

  • Weighing your options without pressure from anyone else
  • Grief, guilt and relief, which often show up together
  • Feelings around open adoption contact, visits, letters or silence
  • Mood changes after birth, which may call for postpartum depression counseling
  • Birthdays, anniversaries and other days that bring the loss back

How can counseling help adoptees?

Adoptees may carry questions about where they came from, why they were placed and who they are. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry notes that interest in birth parents often grows in adolescence, and that this curiosity is normal and does not mean a teen is rejecting their adoptive parents. For adults, questions often come up around a search or reunion, DNA test results, becoming a parent, or the death of an adoptive parent. Counseling lets you sort through those feelings without having to protect anyone else's. For younger adoptees, child and teen counseling is a good place to start.

What about adoptive parents and families?

Adoptive parents often want help explaining adoption to a child, answering hard questions honestly, or handling their own feelings about a birth family. Some are carrying grief of their own, such as infertility or a placement that fell through. Family counseling can help everyone talk about adoption more openly, and individual sessions give parents a place for their own worry, grief or fatigue.

Who will I work with?

Several Foundations counselors list relinquishment as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out by calling 970.227.2770 or booking online, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast) and Loveland, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What this counseling does not cover

Foundations counselors do not give legal advice, arrange adoptions, conduct home studies or make placement recommendations. For questions about consent, parental rights or open adoption agreements, talk with an adoption attorney or a licensed adoption agency. Counseling here is outpatient and is not crisis care. If you are thinking about suicide or feel unsafe, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7, or call 911 in an emergency.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Weighing an Adoption Decision

Are you pregnant and unsure whether placing your baby is right for you? Counseling offers a private space to think it through, with no stake in what you decide.

Grief After Placement

Missing a child you placed for adoption, whether it was weeks or decades ago, and feeling a loss that others around you may not recognize or understand.

Love and Loss at Once

Holding relief, love, sadness and regret all together, and feeling like you are supposed to pick one feeling when the truth includes all of them.

Questions About Who You Are

As an adoptee, you may wonder where you come from, why things happened as they did, and how your story fits into the person you are becoming.

Grief Nobody Talks About

Feeling like your loss must stay hidden or that you are not allowed to mourn it, which can leave you carrying it alone for years.

Thinking About a Reunion

Do you hope for contact with birth family, or fear it? Searching, being found or waiting for a reply can stir up hope, fear and old grief.

Gaps in Your Story

Living with closed records, missing details or a history that changed as you learned more, and feeling unsettled by everything you still do not know.

Tension in an Adoptive Family

Adoptive parents and children sometimes struggle to talk about birth family, identity or belonging, and want help understanding each other with more openness and care.

Anniversaries That Hit Hard

Birthdays, holidays and placement dates can bring waves of sadness or numbness each year, sometimes catching you off guard even when life otherwise feels settled.

Answers to Common Questions

Is relinquishment counseling only for birth mothers?

No. Birth fathers, grandparents and siblings can feel the loss of a placement too, and they are welcome to reach out. Partners sometimes come in together when they made the decision together or see it differently. Tell us who is involved when you reach out, and we will match you with a counselor who works with relinquishment and adoption.

Can counseling help me prepare for an adoption reunion?

Yes. Whether you are an adoptee searching for birth family or a birth parent who has been found, a reunion can stir up hope, fear and old grief. Your counselor can help you think through what you want from contact, how to pace it, and how to care for yourself whether the reunion goes well, stalls or does not happen.

Can a counselor help with adoption paperwork or talk to my agency?

No. Foundations counselors do not handle legal documents, consents or agency decisions, and they do not give legal advice. What your counselor can do is help you prepare emotionally, sort out the questions you want to ask, and process what you hear. For legal or placement questions, talk directly with an adoption attorney or a licensed adoption agency.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Do I need to know my full adoption story to start counseling?

No. Many adoptees have closed records, partial information or a story that changed as they learned more. You can start with whatever you know and whatever you are feeling now. Counseling is not about filling in every gap; it is about understanding how your story affects you today and what you want to do with it.
