How do Foundations counselors use music in therapy?

Music in therapy at Foundations Counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor means using songs, playlists, lyrics and rhythm as tools inside talk therapy, for people who find it easier to reach feelings through music than through words alone. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What does using music in therapy mean at Foundations?

For many people, music is already how they cope: the song they play after a hard day, the lyrics that say what they cannot. Some Foundations counselors bring that into counseling. Music becomes something you talk about and work with, alongside ordinary conversation, rather than a performance or a lesson. You do not need any musical skill, and you will never be asked to sing or play unless you want to.

Is this the same as music therapy?

No, and the difference matters. The American Music Therapy Association defines music therapy as the clinical and evidence based use of music interventions within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Foundations counselors who use music are licensed counselors using music as one tool in talk therapy. If you are looking for a credentialed music therapist, for example for a child with developmental needs, rehabilitation, or medical settings, start with the American Music Therapy Association to learn about the profession and how credentialed music therapists work.

What might a session include?

It depends on you and your counselor, and music may be a small part of a session or a bigger one. Examples include:

  • Lyric discussion: bringing in a song that feels like your life right now and talking about why.
  • Playlists for moods: building a playlist to help you calm down, get moving, or sit with grief.
  • Music and memory: using songs tied to a person or time in your life to open up conversations about loss or change.
  • Rhythm and breath: using steady music to slow breathing and settle the body.
  • Writing: writing a verse or a few lines about what you feel, with no expectation of quality.

Can music help with anxiety, stress or depression?

Research suggests music can be a useful support. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health summarizes studies in which music based interventions improved depression symptoms when added to usual treatment, and in which music based approaches had beneficial effects on stress. NCCIH also notes that some of these interventions fit the definition of music therapy and others do not. Music in counseling works best as part of the whole plan, together with work on thoughts, relationships and daily habits, such as in anxiety counseling or depression counseling.

Who will I work with?

A small number of Foundations counselors bring music into their sessions. Tell us that music matters to you when you reach out by calling 970.227.2770 or booking online, and we will match you with one of those counselors. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will help you find another Foundations counselor.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What does this page not cover?

Foundations does not provide music therapy services by a credentialed music therapist, music lessons, or medical or rehabilitation care. It offers one on one outpatient talk therapy and is not crisis care. If you are thinking about suicide or are in emotional distress, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Songs Say It Better

Do certain lyrics say exactly what you have been feeling but cannot put into words? Music can be a natural starting point for conversations that are hard to begin.

Hard to Talk About Feelings

Finding it difficult to describe emotions directly, freezing up or going blank when someone asks how you feel, even when there is a lot going on inside.

Music Is How You Cope

Reaching for a certain playlist after a hard day, on a long drive or when you cannot sleep, and wanting to understand what that music is doing for you.

Emotions That Feel Stuck

Sadness, anger or grief that sits heavy but will not come out in words, sometimes loosening only when a familiar song starts to play.

Grief Tied to a Song

A song that reminds you of someone you lost can bring comfort and pain at once. Talking through that connection can be a gentle way into grief.

Talk Therapy Felt Flat Before

Have past sessions felt like answering questions without getting anywhere? Bringing your music into counseling can make the conversation feel more personal and more alive.

Teens Who Speak Through Music

Many teens share a song more easily than they explain a feeling. Talking about their music can help them open up and build trust with a counselor.

Stress That Needs an Outlet

Carrying tension, worry or restlessness and noticing that rhythm, a favorite song or simply listening closely helps you settle when other strategies fall short.

Wanting to Feel Understood

Do you feel like people do not quite get you? Sharing the music that matters to you can help someone see your world more clearly.

Answers to Common Questions

Do I need to play an instrument or be able to sing?

No. Most music use in counseling involves listening, choosing songs, or talking about lyrics. If you play or sing and want to bring that in, your counselor can welcome it, but nobody is graded and nothing has to sound good. People who say they are not musical at all often still find that a familiar song opens up something worth talking about.

Can teens use music in counseling?

Yes, and it is often a natural fit. Many teens already use music to cope and may find it easier to share a song than to explain a feeling. Talking about their music can help a counselor understand what is going on and build trust. When you reach out, share your teen's age and interests so we can match them with a counselor who works with teens.

Can I bring my own songs or playlist to a session?

Yes, please do if you would like. Your own music is usually the most meaningful place to start. You can play a song from your phone, share lyrics, or simply describe what you have been listening to lately. Your counselor will ask what the music brings up for you rather than judging your taste.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Does music work in online sessions?

Often, yes. You can share a song through your device, read lyrics together, or talk about what you have been listening to. Sound quality over video varies, so many people listen on their own and then discuss it in session. If music is a big part of what you want, you can mention a preference for in person sessions when you reach out.
