About Mike

Change does not always begin with having the answers. Sometimes it begins with having a place where you can be honest about what is happening in your life without feeling judged, labeled, or expected to have everything figured out. Mike Henderson believes counseling should provide that kind of space: a place where people can show up as they are, explore what is getting in the way, and begin moving toward the life they want to live.

Mike brings a warm, laid-back, open-minded, and empathetic approach to counseling. He believes a strong therapeutic relationship should feel genuine and human. While therapy can involve difficult conversations and serious work, Mike also believes there is room for humor, personality, and authenticity along the way. His goal is to meet clients where they are, understand their experiences without judgment, and work collaboratively to identify meaningful and realistic paths forward.

Mike earned a Master of Addiction Counseling degree in Psychology from Colorado State University, as well as a Master of Public Administration degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Ashford University. His education and training across counseling, public administration, and sociology give him a broad foundation for understanding people not only as individuals, but within the families, relationships, communities, organizations, and social systems that shape their lives.

His clinical experience includes working with individuals experiencing both substance use and mental health concerns across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Mike has provided individual counseling, facilitated therapeutic groups, conducted assessments, and supported clients navigating addiction, anxiety, depression, trauma, anger, relationship difficulties, and other complex life circumstances.

Mike's therapeutic approach is integrative and tailored to each person rather than built on the belief that one approach works for everyone. His clinical work draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Person-Centered Therapy, Solution-Focused approaches, Trauma-Informed Care, and principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Above all, Mike believes effective counseling begins with a genuine therapeutic relationship built on trust, respect, collaboration, and the freedom to be honest.

Before entering the counseling profession, Mike served for more than 20 years in the United States Air Force, retiring after a career centered on leadership, mentorship, and service alongside people from every walk of life. His military experience gives him a firsthand appreciation for the culture of military service and the challenges that can accompany transition, identity, relationships, stress, and life after service. It also shaped his belief that asking for support is not incompatible with strength.

Outside the counseling office, Mike is a father of two teenage daughters who values family, connection, humor, and making the most of life outside of work. Music has long been an important part of his life. He writes and records his own, and it remains one of the ways he enjoys creativity, expression, and connection with others, along with cooking and skateboarding. These parts of his life contribute to the grounded, authentic person he brings into the counseling room.

Mike believes clients do not need a therapist who pretends to have all the answers. They need someone willing to listen, understand, challenge when appropriate, laugh when appropriate, and walk alongside them while they work toward meaningful change.
