What is mindfulness based therapy at Foundations?

Mindfulness based therapy in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling helps people who feel stressed, anxious or stuck in their heads learn to notice thoughts, feelings and body sensations without being swept away by them. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What is mindfulness based therapy?

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, with curiosity instead of judgment. In counseling, it is less about sitting still for long periods and more about building a skill you can use when life gets loud: noticing a spiral of worry as it starts, feeling tension in your shoulders before it becomes a headache, or pausing before you react in an argument. Mindfulness based therapy brings these skills into regular talk therapy, so you practice them with support and then use them in your week.

What happens in a mindfulness focused session?

Most of a session is still conversation about what is going on in your life. Your counselor may weave in short practices, often just a few minutes long, such as:

  • Breathing practices: slow, steady breathing that supports what NCCIH calls the relaxation response: slower breathing, lower blood pressure and a reduced heart rate.
  • Body scans: moving attention through the body to notice tension, tiredness or calm.
  • Grounding: using your senses to come back to the room when your mind races ahead.
  • Noticing thoughts: watching thoughts come and go instead of treating each one as an order.

Afterward, you talk about what you noticed and how to bring the practice into daily life. Mindfulness also shows up inside other approaches Foundations counselors use, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Does mindfulness actually help with anxiety and depression?

The evidence is encouraging, with some limits. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health summarizes research showing that mindfulness based approaches were better than no treatment at all and worked as well as evidence based therapies for anxiety and depression, while studies that followed people for more than two months found few long term effects. That is one reason Foundations counselors tend to treat mindfulness as one tool inside counseling, not the whole plan. It often pairs well with anxiety counseling and stress management counseling.

Is mindfulness right for everyone?

Not always, and not in the same way. NCCIH notes that a small share of people have a negative reaction to meditation, most often more anxiety or low mood. For someone with a trauma history, closing your eyes or focusing inward can sometimes feel unsafe. A counselor can adjust: eyes open, shorter practices, movement instead of stillness, or skipping a practice that does not suit you. You are always in charge of what you try. NCCIH also advises that mindfulness should not replace conventional care for a medical problem.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list mindfulness as part of how they work. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out by calling 970.227.2770 or booking online, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will help you find another Foundations counselor.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What does this page not cover?

Foundations offers one on one outpatient talk therapy. It does not offer meditation classes or retreats, and it is not crisis care. For medication questions, talk with your physician. If you are thinking about suicide or are in emotional distress, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Stuck in Your Head

Constant overthinking, replaying conversations or worrying about what comes next, leaving little room to notice what is actually happening around you right now.

Racing Thoughts at Night

Do you lie awake while your mind runs through lists, worries and what ifs? Learning to notice thoughts without chasing them can make rest feel more possible.

Reacting Before You Think

Snapping at loved ones or saying things you regret, then wondering how it happened so fast. A brief pause can make room for a different choice.

Feeling Constantly on Edge

A steady hum of stress or tension that never fully switches off, showing up as tight shoulders, shallow breathing or trouble relaxing even on quiet days.

Disconnected From Your Body

Missing the early signals of stress, hunger or exhaustion until they become headaches, crashes or burnout, and wanting to notice what your body is telling you sooner.

A Harsh Inner Critic

Judging yourself for every mistake or feeling, and wishing you could meet your own struggles with the same patience and kindness you offer others.

Life on Autopilot

Are your days blurring together, rushing from one task to the next without really being present for any of it? Mindfulness can help you slow down and notice.

Overwhelmed by Strong Emotions

Feelings like anxiety, sadness or anger arriving so fast and strong that they seem to take over before you can make sense of them.

Meditation Never Seemed to Stick

Maybe you downloaded an app or tried sitting still and felt like you were failing. Counseling offers short, practical ways to build the skill that fit your life.

Answers to Common Questions

Do I have to meditate to benefit from mindfulness in therapy?

No. Formal meditation is only one way to practice mindfulness. Many people build the skill in small moments instead: noticing their feet on the floor, taking three slow breaths before a hard conversation, or paying full attention while walking or washing dishes. Your counselor will help you find practices that fit your life and your attention span.

What if my mind wanders constantly when I try to be mindful?

That is normal, and it is not failure. Noticing that your mind has wandered and gently bringing it back is the practice itself. People with busy minds, ADHD or a lot of stress often find shorter practices, movement based practices or eyes open exercises easier to start with. Your counselor can help you adjust instead of forcing one style.

Is mindfulness religious?

Mindfulness has roots in contemplative traditions, including Buddhism, but in counseling it is taught as a practical attention skill and does not require any belief system. If faith matters to you, your counselor can connect mindfulness to your own tradition, such as prayer or quiet reflection, or keep it entirely secular. You can share your preference when you reach out.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Is mindfulness the same thing as relaxation?

Not exactly. Relaxation aims to calm the body, and mindfulness practices often do that. But mindfulness is mainly about noticing what is here, including discomfort, without fighting it or judging it. Sometimes a practice leaves you calmer, and sometimes it simply helps you see a pattern more clearly. Both outcomes are useful, and your counselor will help you make sense of what you notice.

How quickly will I notice a difference from mindfulness practice?

Some people feel calmer after a single practice, but lasting change usually comes from regular, brief practice over weeks. Think of it like strengthening a muscle. Your counselor will check in on what you notice, such as sleeping a bit better or catching worry sooner, and adjust the plan if something is not helping.
