About Sam

When one step seems too difficult, let us begin with one breath. Sam Sorensen believes that the courage and strength our bodies use to fight for us to breathe is the same strength and courage we can use to heal and grow. With a little humor, support, a safe environment, and a dash of creativity, Sam creates a person-centered and strengths-based approach tailored to the unique personality and lifestyle of each person who walks through her door.

At Foundations Counseling, Sam Sorensen works with a wide variety of clients who may be seeking services that include:

- Teens and Adults: cutting and self-injury, self-esteem and self-worth issues, suicidal ideation, depression, PTSD, social and relationship problems, trauma, anger and defiance, anxiety, and abuse
- Mental Health and Wellness: depression, stress, sex and porn addiction recovery, trauma and abuse recovery, self-esteem, somatic and body image concerns, art therapy, PTSD, anger management, and assertiveness training
- Individual Counseling: sexual, mental, and physical abuse, anger management, anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction, men's and women's issues, self-esteem, abandonment issues, personality disorders, and divorce recovery
- Relationship Dynamics: affair recovery, attachment issues, conflict resolution, family relationships, premarital counseling, and finding your voice in relationships
- Life Transitions: life stages, spirituality, grief and loss, role expectations, restoring meaning to life, and establishing self

Sam holds a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Counseling, both from Liberty University. She is certified in the SYMBIS assessment for premarital couples, which helps partners navigate the topics that arise throughout marriage. Sam draws on techniques from somatic and polyvagal therapy, trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, art therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Person-Centered Therapy.

Sam has been involved in helping and supporting people for the past six years, beginning when she mentored at-risk students from elementary through high school. That experience sparked her passion for providing a safe space where people feel their voice holds weight and meaning. Sam has extensive experience working with teens and adults who are working to overcome trauma and abuse, including sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. She also has experience with adolescents and couples navigating family and relational challenges, boundaries, and finding their voice.

Outside the counseling office, Sam is an artist and a traveler, the middle child of two sisters, and happiest with a sketchbook or a good book in hand. Drawing, reading, and exploring new places keep her creative, curious, and grounded, and that same creativity shapes the way she works with clients.
