What is emotional regulation therapy at Foundations?

Emotional regulation therapy in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling helps teens and adults whose feelings come on fast, hit hard or take long to settle. What is emotional regulation?

Cleveland Clinic describes emotional regulation as the ability to understand and manage your emotions in healthy ways, and emotional dysregulation as difficulty managing your emotions and the way you react to them. Regulation is not the same as staying calm all the time or pushing feelings down. It means you can feel something strongly, ride it out, and still act in a way you can stand behind later.

What does trouble with emotional regulation look like?

It looks different from person to person:

  • Anger that jumps from zero to ten, followed by guilt or shame.
  • Crying spells or panic that feel impossible to stop once they start.
  • Going numb, shutting down or leaving the room to avoid a feeling.
  • Turning to scrolling, spending, food or alcohol to take the edge off.

Stress makes all of this harder. Mayo Clinic lists angry outbursts and avoiding friends among the ways stress shows up in behavior. Trouble with regulation can travel with anxiety, ADHD, trauma or depression, and it can also show up on its own. Your counselor will help you sort out what is going on for you.

How is this different from DBT?

Emotional regulation is the goal; Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is one structured method for reaching it, with skill areas that include emotion regulation and distress tolerance. This page is about the problem itself, so your counselor can draw on whatever fits you. Cleveland Clinic notes that cognitive behavioral therapy, DBT, acceptance and commitment therapy and family therapy may all help, depending on your needs. If you already know you want a DBT based approach, our DBT page explains how Foundations uses it. If anger is the main concern, see anger management counseling.

What will I actually practice in sessions?

Most people work on four things. First, noticing early signs in the body, like a tight jaw or racing heart, before a feeling peaks. Second, naming the emotion accurately, which tends to lower its intensity. Third, getting through the hardest few minutes without making things worse, using breathing, grounding and stepping away. Fourth, repair: going back to a conversation once you are steady. Your counselor also looks at what keeps you vulnerable, such as poor sleep, constant stress or old hurts that a situation stirs up.

Can parents get help with a child's or teen's big emotions?

Yes. Foundations offers child and teen therapy, and counselors often coach parents on staying steady during a meltdown so a child can borrow that calm. Teens can learn the same skills adults do, in language that fits their lives.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list emotional regulation as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the first match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who fits better.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

Safety and what this page does not cover

If intense emotions come with thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. Foundations provides outpatient, one on one talk therapy. It is not crisis care, an intensive or residential program, or medication management. Questions about medication belong with your physician or a psychiatric provider.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Zero to Ten in Seconds

A small frustration turns into anger or tears before you can stop it. Afterward you are left with guilt, wondering why it hit so hard.

Feelings That Will Not Settle

Once you are upset, it can take hours or even days to calm down. The feeling lingers long after the moment that started it.

Shutting Down or Going Numb

When emotions get big, you go quiet, leave the room or feel nothing at all. Numbness can feel safer than facing what is underneath.

Regret After Reacting

Do you often wish you could take back a text, a comment or a decision made while upset? That cycle of reacting and repairing is exhausting.

Reaching for Quick Escapes

Scrolling, spending, food or a drink can take the edge off for a while. The relief does not last, and the feelings are still waiting.

Relationships Taking the Hit

The people closest to you may feel like they are walking on eggshells. Conflicts escalate quickly, and repair feels harder than it should.

Overwhelmed by Small Stresses

A traffic jam, a messy kitchen or a change in plans can feel unbearable on some days. Your capacity seems smaller than it used to be.

Never Learned How to Cope

Did you grow up in a home where feelings were ignored, punished or explosive? Many adults simply never got to learn these skills, and they can still be learned.

A Child's Big Emotions

Meltdowns and outbursts at home leave you drained and unsure how to respond. You want to stay steady so your child can learn to calm down too.

Answers to Common Questions

Does trouble regulating emotions mean I have a mental illness?

Not necessarily. Everyone has moments when feelings take over, especially under stress, poor sleep or grief. Difficulty with regulation can be part of conditions such as anxiety, ADHD or trauma, and it can also simply be a skill you never got to learn. A licensed counselor can help you understand what is contributing, without starting from a label.

Can adults learn emotional regulation if they never learned it growing up?

Yes. These skills usually start developing in childhood, but they keep growing with practice at any age. Many adults who grew up in homes where feelings were ignored, punished or explosive learn regulation for the first time in counseling. Progress tends to look like smaller spikes, shorter recovery and more choice about how you respond.

What can I do in the moment when a feeling spikes?

Slow your breathing, with a longer exhale than inhale. Put a little distance between you and the trigger, even a few steps. Name the feeling to yourself in a word or two. Wait before sending the text or making the decision. These are simple on purpose; counseling helps you make them automatic so they are there when you need them.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Will emotional regulation work stop me from feeling angry or sad?

No, and that is not the goal. Anger, sadness and fear carry useful information. Regulation work helps those feelings arrive at a size that fits the situation and pass without damage to you or your relationships. Most people say they feel their emotions more clearly, not less, once they stop fighting or fearing them.

How is emotional regulation counseling different from anger management?

Anger management focuses on one emotion and its effects, often on relationships or work. Emotional regulation counseling is broader and includes anxiety, sadness, shame and shutting down as well as anger. If anger is your main concern, the anger management page may fit better, and many counselors cover both.

How long does it take to get better at managing emotions?

It varies. Some people notice small changes within the first several sessions, such as catching a feeling earlier or recovering faster after an argument. Building new habits that hold up under stress usually takes longer, because the skills need practice in real situations. Your counselor will check progress with you and adjust the plan as you go.
