What is chronic pain and illness counseling at Foundations?

Chronic pain and illness counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling helps people living with ongoing pain, a long term condition or a serious diagnosis cope with the stress, grief and mood changes that come with them. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

Why see a counselor for a physical condition?

Pain and illness do not stay in the body. They change sleep, work, money, relationships and how you see yourself. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that people who have a chronic disease are at a higher risk of developing depression, and that depression is treatable even when you have a chronic disease. Counseling does not replace your medical care. It gives you a place to work on the parts your doctor's appointment does not have time for: the frustration of flares, the fear of what comes next, and the feeling that nobody quite understands.

Can therapy actually help with pain?

Counseling will not remove the cause of your pain, but it can change how much pain runs your life. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, part of NIH, reports that cognitive behavioral therapy is the prevailing psychological intervention for chronic pain, and that mindfulness based approaches and CBT both help with pain intensity and physical functioning. In sessions that can look like pacing activity so good days do not turn into crashes, working with the thoughts that make pain feel endless, practicing body calming skills, and reconnecting with things that still matter to you. Some counselors use CBT and acceptance based ideas as part of this work.

How do I cope with grief over the life I had before?

Many people with a long term condition grieve quietly: the job they had to leave, the hike they cannot do, the plans that changed. That grief is real even when nobody has died. Counseling makes room for it without rushing you toward acceptance. Over time, people often find a way of living that holds both the loss and a life that still feels like theirs. If grief is the main thing you are carrying, our grief therapy page explains that work.

What about palliative care, aging or a terminal diagnosis?

Some Foundations counselors work with people facing serious or terminal illness and with the families around them. Sessions can help with fear, decisions, unfinished conversations, and the strain of watching someone you love decline. Counseling sits alongside your medical and palliative care team; it does not replace them.

Can counseling help with depression or anxiety that started with my illness?

Yes. Cleveland Clinic notes that chronic pain often leads to other conditions such as anxiety and depression. A counselor can help you sort out what is the illness, what is mood, and what can change. If low mood has taken over, see depression therapy; if worry about your health is constant, anxiety therapy may help.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list chronic pain as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us about your condition when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What does this counseling not cover?

Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy. Counselors do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, manage pain medication, or give medication advice; please keep working with your physician and specialists. Online sessions can help on days when pain makes driving hard. Long term pain and illness can wear people down, and thoughts of not wanting to go on are more common than people admit. If you are thinking about suicide or feel you cannot stay safe, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Pain That Runs the Day

Plans, sleep and moods all bend around how your body feels. Some days it seems the pain makes every decision, and you are just along for the ride.

Grieving the Life Before

You miss the job, the hobbies or the energy you used to have. That grief is real, even when nobody else seems to see what you have lost.

Feeling Misunderstood

Do people say you look fine, or hint that it might be in your head? Not being believed can hurt almost as much as the condition itself.

Worn Down and Low

Months or years of managing symptoms can drain your hope. You may notice sadness, irritability or a flat feeling that has settled in alongside the illness.

Fear About What Comes Next

Test results, flares and changes in your health keep you on edge. Worry about the future can be constant, especially when answers are slow to come.

Boom and Bust Days

On good days you push to catch up, then pay for it with a crash. Finding a steadier pace feels hard when there is always so much to do.

Strain on Relationships

Roles shift when you are sick. A partner becomes a caregiver, plans get canceled, and you may feel guilty, lonely or like a burden to the people you love.

Facing a Serious Illness

A life changing or terminal illness brings fear, hard decisions and conversations you never expected to have. Counseling offers a calm place to sort through them.

Losing Sight of Who You Are

When your days center on appointments and symptoms, it is easy to feel like a patient first. Counseling can help you reconnect with what still matters to you.

Answers to Common Questions

Does going to counseling mean my pain is all in my head?

No. Your pain is real, and seeing a counselor does not mean anyone thinks otherwise. Pain is processed by the brain and nervous system, and stress, sleep and mood all affect how intense it feels. Counseling works on those parts alongside your medical care. Many people feel relief simply from talking with someone who takes their experience seriously.

Can my partner or family come to sessions?

Often, yes. Chronic illness changes roles at home: who works, who drives, who cooks, who worries. Bringing a partner or family member to some sessions can help everyone talk about it without blame. Mention this when you reach out so we can match you with a counselor who works with couples or families, or see our family therapy page.

Should my counselor talk with my doctor?

Only if you want them to. With your written permission, your counselor can coordinate with your physician or care team, for example to share that you are in counseling or to line up goals. Without your consent, what you say in counseling stays private, within the legal limits your counselor will explain at the start.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

What if I have to cancel because of a flare?

Flares happen, and counselors who work with chronic illness understand that. Sessions cancelled at least 48 hours ahead are not charged, and switching to an online session is often possible on days when getting to the office is too much. If your condition is unpredictable, tell your counselor early so you can plan a backup together.

Is there counseling for caregivers of someone with a chronic illness?

Yes. Caring for someone with a long term or terminal illness is exhausting, and caregivers often put their own needs last. Counseling gives you a place to talk about guilt, resentment, fear and grief without burdening the person you care for. You can come on your own, even if your loved one is not in counseling.

How long does chronic illness counseling usually take?

It depends on what you want help with. Some people come for a few months to build coping skills during a new diagnosis or a hard flare, then check in as needed. Others prefer steady support over a longer stretch, especially with a progressive or serious illness. Your counselor sets goals with you, and session frequency can flex around medical appointments.
