What is military and veteran counseling at Foundations?

Military and veteran counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling is one on one talk therapy for active duty service members, Guard and Reserve members, veterans and their families, covering transition, combat stress and relationships. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What do service members and veterans come to counseling for?

The reasons are as varied as military careers. Some people come in after a deployment that changed how they sleep, react or relate to people at home. Others are adjusting to civilian life and miss the structure, mission and team they had. Many come in for things that have nothing to do with combat at all: a marriage strained by moves and separations, anger that feels too close to the surface, drinking that has crept up, or grief for friends lost during or after service. You do not need a diagnosis or a combat history to start.

How common is PTSD among veterans?

The VA National Center for PTSD reports that about 7 out of every 100 veterans will have PTSD at some point in their life, and that rates are higher among women veterans and among those who deployed. That also means most veterans do not develop PTSD, even after hard experiences. Common signs worth taking seriously include nightmares, staying on guard in safe places, avoiding reminders, and feeling cut off from people. Foundations counselors who work with PTSD can help you sort out what you are dealing with and what to work on first.

What is moral injury?

Sometimes what lingers after service is not fear but guilt, shame or anger about something you did, could not stop or saw happen. The VA National Center for PTSD describes moral injury as what can happen after someone takes part in, fails to prevent or witnesses an event that goes against their morals or values, and names war and combat among the experiences that can cause it. Counseling gives you a private place to look honestly at those memories, at responsibility and at forgiveness, at your own pace.

Why choose a private practice instead of the VA?

Many veterans get excellent care through the VA, and you can use both. Some people want a counselor outside the military and VA system, shorter waits, or sessions close to home in Northern Colorado. Foundations is private pay, so sessions are not billed through the VA or TRICARE. If cost is a concern, VA Vet Centers are community based counseling centers for eligible veterans, service members and their families at no cost, and we are glad to point you there.

Can my spouse or family get support too?

Yes. Deployments, moves, long separations and a loved one who comes home different affect the whole household. Foundations offers individual counseling for spouses and partners, couples counseling, and family counseling when kids are feeling the strain of a parent's service or transition.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list military service members and veterans among the people they work with. You can meet them in the team section on this page. When you reach out, share as much or as little as you want about your service and what is going on now, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the fit is not right, the Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find you another counselor.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What this page does not cover

If you are a veteran or service member in crisis, reach the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 then pressing 1, or text 838255; you do not have to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care. Anyone can also call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy. We do not complete VA disability or compensation and pension exams, nexus letters, or fitness for duty evaluations, and we do not give medication advice; talk with your physician or VA provider about medication.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Missing the Mission and Team

Leaving the service can mean losing the structure, purpose and people who understood you, and civilian life may feel aimless or hard to relate to.

Sleep and Nightmares

Trouble falling asleep, waking in a sweat or dreading the night can leave you worn out and on edge during the day.

On Guard in Safe Places

Do crowded stores, sudden noises or sitting with your back to the door put you on high alert? Your body may still be ready for a threat that is no longer there.

Anger Close to the Surface

Frustration that flares quickly at home, on the road or at work can surprise you and strain the relationships you care about most.

Strain on Your Marriage

Deployments, moves and long separations can leave partners feeling like strangers, and reconnecting does not always happen on its own.

Guilt, Shame or Anger About Service

Something you did, could not stop or witnessed may still weigh on you, leaving questions about responsibility and forgiveness that are hard to talk about.

Grieving Friends You Lost

Losing people you served with, during service or after, can bring grief that is complicated, heavy and not easily shared with those who were not there.

Drinking More Than You Used To

Has drinking crept up as a way to sleep, unwind or quiet your thoughts? Many people notice it slowly becoming a habit they did not choose.

Cut Off From People at Home

You may feel distant from family and friends, unsure how to explain what you have been through or whether anyone would understand.

Answers to Common Questions

Do I have to talk about combat or deployments?

No. You decide what to share and when. Many service members and veterans start with what is happening now, such as sleep, irritability, relationships or a job change, and only talk about service experiences once trust is built. Your counselor will not push for details you are not ready to share, and progress does not depend on retelling every story.

Will my command or the VA know I am in counseling?

Foundations is an independent private practice, separate from the military and the VA, and you reach out to us directly. What you share stays between you and your counselor, with the legal exceptions every counselor follows, such as an immediate risk of harm. Your counselor explains those limits in your first session, and records are released only with your written consent.

Can counseling help with the transition to civilian life?

Yes. Leaving the military can mean losing a built in team, a clear mission and a daily structure all at once. Counseling helps you name what you miss, rebuild routine and purpose, translate your strengths into civilian work, and handle the friction that often shows up at home during the first year or two after separation.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Do you work with Guard and Reserve members?

Yes. Guard and Reserve members often juggle civilian jobs, drill weekends and activations, with less built in support than active duty bases offer. Counseling can help with the stress of switching between roles, family strain around activations, and anything that followed you home from a deployment. Online sessions anywhere in Colorado can help fit counseling around drill schedules.
