What is health and wellness counseling at Foundations?

Health and wellness counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling helps adults with the emotional side of physical health: stress that shows up in the body, a new diagnosis, chronic illness, sleep and habits that will not stick. It works alongside medical care. Private pay, about $200 per session, free consultation, first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What is health and wellness counseling?

It is talk therapy that treats your mind and body as connected. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that mental health includes emotional, psychological and social well-being. Mayo Clinic explains that stress symptoms can affect your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behavior, from headaches and sleep problems to muscle tension and an upset stomach. Counseling helps you work on both sides of that loop.

Can counseling help with a chronic illness or a new diagnosis?

Yes. Living with ongoing pain, a long recovery or a condition that changes your plans can bring grief, worry, frustration and isolation. According to NIMH, people who have a chronic disease are at higher risk of developing depression, and depression is treatable even when you have a chronic disease. Your counselor can help you adjust to what has changed, manage fear about what comes next, talk with family about what you need, and keep a sense of who you are beyond the diagnosis.

How do counselors help with sleep, movement and eating habits?

Most people already know what they are supposed to do; the hard part is doing it. Counseling looks at what gets in the way, such as stress, low mood, all or nothing thinking or a schedule that leaves no room, and builds small changes you can keep. NIMH suggests practical steps like regular exercise, a sleep schedule and a balanced diet. Your counselor helps you turn general advice into a plan that fits your life. For more focused help, see stress management, sleep counseling and weight and health counseling.

Does this replace my doctor?

No. Health and wellness counseling works alongside your medical care, never instead of it. Your counselor does not diagnose physical conditions, recommend medications or supplements, or write meal or exercise plans. Bring new or changing physical symptoms to your physician. Counseling can help you prepare for appointments, ask clear questions, and follow through on a care plan you and your doctor agree on.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list health and wellness as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the first match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who fits better.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Stress Your Body Carries

Tight shoulders, headaches, an upset stomach or a racing heart can be your body's way of holding stress your mind has not had room to process yet.

Life After Hard Health News

Does a recent health change have you feeling scared, angry or unsure what comes next? It is natural to need space to absorb news that changes your plans.

Living With Ongoing Pain

Chronic pain or a long recovery can wear down your patience, mood and sense of self, leaving you tired of explaining how you feel to people who cannot see it.

Sleep That Will Not Come

Lying awake replaying the day, waking at 3 a.m. with your mind already running, or never feeling rested can make every other part of life feel heavier.

Habits That Never Stick

Do you know what you are supposed to do for your health but keep falling off track? Stress, low mood and all or nothing thinking often get in the way.

Constant Worry About Your Health

Checking symptoms, searching online late at night or bracing for bad news can take over your days, even when you want to trust your body again.

Feeling Like a Different Person

When illness or injury changes what you can do, you may miss the person you were and struggle to see who you are beyond your health.

Worn Down From Caring for Someone

Caring for a partner, parent or child who is ill can leave you exhausted, guilty for needing a break and quietly carrying worry you rarely say out loud.

Mind and Body Out of Sync

Are you doing everything your doctor suggests and still feeling off? Counseling offers a place to look at how your thoughts, emotions and body affect one another.

Answers to Common Questions

If my symptoms are stress related, does that mean they are all in my head?

No. Stress produces real physical changes, like muscle tension, headaches, stomach trouble and poor sleep. Calling a symptom stress related does not make it imaginary or your fault. Your doctor should check new or changing symptoms first; counseling then helps you lower the stress load that keeps them going.

Can counseling help with constant worry about my health?

Yes. Some people find themselves checking symptoms, searching online or seeking reassurance over and over, and the worry starts to run their day. A counselor can help you notice that cycle, tolerate uncertainty, and follow your doctor's guidance without spiraling. This work often overlaps with anxiety counseling.

What if I have tried to change my habits many times and failed?

That is the most common reason people come in. Repeated restarts usually point to something underneath, like stress, shame, perfectionism or a plan that was never realistic for your life. Counseling helps you find that piece and set goals small enough to keep, so progress builds instead of resetting.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can caregivers get support for the strain of caring for someone who is ill?

Yes. Caring for a partner, parent or child with a health condition can wear down your own health, sleep and patience. Counseling gives you a place to talk about the guilt, grief and exhaustion that often come with caregiving, and to plan how to look after yourself so you can keep showing up.

Can I do health and wellness counseling online?

Yes. Online sessions are available anywhere in Colorado, which can help on days when pain, fatigue, treatment side effects or a busy medical schedule make travel hard. In person sessions are available in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor. Tell us your preference when you reach out, and your counselor can talk with you about what works as your health changes.
