What is court-ordered therapy at Foundations?

Court-ordered therapy in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling is one on one counseling for people whose court, probation officer or caseworker requires it. You set goals that matter to you, and with your written consent we can confirm attendance. Private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

Before you book, confirm with your attorney, probation officer or caseworker exactly what your order requires: the type of counseling, how many sessions, and what proof they need. Foundations cannot promise that any letter or record will satisfy a specific court, so getting those details first saves time.

Who comes to court-ordered therapy?

People are referred for many reasons, and nobody here assumes the worst about you. Common situations include:

  • A probation term or deferred sentence that lists counseling as a condition
  • A family court or human services case plan that calls for individual or family counseling
  • Anger or conflict raised in a legal case, where anger management counseling may fit
  • Alcohol or drug concerns, where drug and alcohol counseling may fit
  • Parents working to repair time with their children, sometimes alongside reunification therapy

Requirements differ from case to case. The Colorado Judicial Branch explains that people on probation work with their probation officer to complete the terms and conditions set by the court, so that officer is your best source for what counts.

Can therapy help if I did not choose to be here?

Yes, it can. Many people start counseling feeling pressured, angry or skeptical, and that is a reasonable place to begin. Your counselor will not lecture you or treat you as your case file. You can talk honestly about the case, the stress it puts on your life, and what you want for yourself and the people you care about. The National Institute of Mental Health says rapport and trust are essential in therapy, and building that is part of the early work. Over time, many people find the sessions useful for far more than the paperwork.

What will the court or my caseworker be told?

Nothing without your written permission, except in the limited situations where the law requires a counselor to share information, such as serious safety concerns. Your counselor will explain those limits at the start. If you sign a release, Foundations can confirm your attendance. Anything beyond that is something you and your counselor talk through before you sign, and you can ask your attorney what to authorize.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list court mandated counseling as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us about your order when you reach out by calling 970.227.2770 or booking online, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado. Ask your officer or caseworker whether online sessions count for your order.

What court-ordered therapy here does not include

Foundations provides counseling, not forensic services. Counselors do not perform court evaluations or custody evaluations, do not make custody recommendations, and do not serve as expert witnesses. Some orders require a specific state approved provider or program; for example, Colorado probation may require offense specific treatment with a therapist approved by the state Sex Offender Management Board. Foundations offers one on one counseling only, so if your order calls for a class or a group program, ask your probation officer or caseworker where to find one. If you are thinking about suicide or feel unsafe, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7, or call 911 in an emergency.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Feeling Forced Into Counseling

Being told you have to attend therapy can feel unfair or frustrating, especially when you did not choose to be here and are not sure what to expect.

Distrust of the Process

Do you wonder what gets shared, who reads it, and whether anyone is really on your side? Those questions are reasonable, and your counselor will explain confidentiality clearly.

Pressure to Prove Yourself

Feeling like every session is a test you could fail, with your case, your record or time with your kids riding on how you come across.

Wanting It to Be Worth It

If you have to be here anyway, you may want the time to count. Counseling offers a chance to work on goals that actually matter to you.

Stress of an Ongoing Case

Court dates, check-ins and deadlines can keep you on edge, affecting sleep, work and patience with the people around you while everything feels uncertain.

Shame or Embarrassment

Feeling judged by others, or by yourself, for the situation that led here, and worrying that a counselor will see you only through that one moment.

Anger That Gets in the Way

Do you find frustration or conflict flaring up faster than you would like? Counseling can help you understand what sets it off and practice steadier responses.

Family Relationships Under Strain

A legal situation can put real pressure on a partner, children or extended family, leaving you wanting to repair trust and reconnect with the people who matter most.

Unsure Where to Start

Not knowing what counseling involves, what to say in the first session, or how to meet your requirements can make it hard to even pick up the phone.

Answers to Common Questions

How many sessions of court-ordered therapy will I need?

Your order, case plan or probation officer sets the minimum, so check with them first. Some orders name a number of sessions; others ask for counseling until goals are met. Your counselor will work with you on real goals at a pace that fits, and can talk with you about how progress is usually documented once you have signed a release.

Can I choose my own counselor for a court order?

That depends on your order. Some orders name a specific provider or program, and others leave the choice to you as long as the counselor is licensed. Check with your attorney, probation officer or caseworker before you book. If you are free to choose, tell us about the order when you reach out and we will match you with a Foundations counselor who works with court mandated clients.

What should I bring to my first court-ordered session?

Bring a copy of your order or case plan, contact details for your probation officer, caseworker or attorney, and any forms they asked you to have completed. Your counselor will review what the order asks for and explain confidentiality. Signing a release so Foundations can confirm attendance is your choice, and you can ask questions before you sign anything.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can my family attend court-ordered counseling together?

Sometimes, yes. If your case plan calls for family counseling, Foundations offers family counseling with a counselor who works with the whole household. Confirm with your caseworker which format counts, whether individual, family or both, before you book. Tell us who needs to attend when you reach out so we can match you with the right counselor.

Can court-ordered therapy be done online?

Often, yes. Foundations offers secure online sessions anywhere in Colorado as well as in person sessions in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor. Some courts and probation officers accept online counseling and some require in person attendance, so check with your attorney, officer or caseworker before you choose. With your written consent, your counselor can note the session format when confirming attendance.
