When is a fear actually a phobia?

Everyone is afraid of something. The National Institute of Mental Health describes specific phobia as an intense, irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger, and estimates that about 12.5 percent of U.S. adults experience it at some point in their lives. The difference is what the fear costs you. You might turn down a promotion because it involves flying, skip medical care because of needles, take the long way to avoid a bridge, or feel your heart pound just thinking about a spider in the basement. Most people with a phobia know the fear is out of proportion. Knowing does not make it stop, and that is not a personal failing.

How does phobia therapy work?

Mayo Clinic notes that exposure therapy is the main treatment for specific phobias, because it focuses on changing how you respond to the thing you fear. In counseling, that usually starts with understanding your fear: what sets it off, what you avoid, and what you tell yourself in the moment. Your counselor then helps you build a step by step ladder, from easiest to hardest, and practice each step until your body learns it can stay calm. Many counselors pair this with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) skills for catching catastrophic thoughts, plus breathing and grounding tools for the moments when fear spikes.

Will I have to face my fear right away?

No. Nobody will surprise you with a snake or push you onto a plane. You and your counselor decide the steps together, and you set the pace. Early steps are often small, such as talking about the fear, looking at a photo, or imagining a short scene. Later steps move into real life practice between sessions, like standing in an elevator for one floor or watching a video of a blood draw. The goal is not to make you fearless. It is to make the fear small enough that it no longer makes your decisions.

What if my fear is part of broader anxiety, panic or OCD?

Sometimes a phobia stands alone. Other times it sits inside a bigger pattern, such as panic attacks, constant worry, social anxiety, or intrusive thoughts and rituals. Your counselor will look at the whole picture during your first sessions. If worry shows up in many areas of life, our anxiety therapy page explains that broader work. If the fear comes with repeated checking or rituals, see OCD therapy. If it began after a frightening event, such as a car accident or a dog attack, trauma therapy may be a better place to start.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list phobias as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you are afraid of when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What does phobia therapy at Foundations not cover?

Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy. Counselors do not prescribe or give advice about medication. MedlinePlus notes that phobia treatment can include medicines, therapy or both, so if you want to talk about medication, for example before a flight or a medical procedure, ask your physician. If fear keeps you from leaving home at all, online sessions are a reasonable first step. Phobia therapy is not crisis care. If you are thinking about suicide or feel you cannot stay safe, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

A Fear That Makes Your Choices

Flying, needles, driving, heights or a certain animal now decide where you go and what you say yes to. The fear has quietly started running parts of your life.

Knowing It Is Irrational

You know the danger is small, and telling yourself that does not help. Your body reacts anyway, and that gap can feel frustrating and a little embarrassing.

Avoiding Places and Plans

Taking the long way around a bridge, skipping a trip, or turning down a job because of what it involves. Avoidance brings relief now and a smaller life later.

Panic Just Thinking About It

Your heart pounds, your hands sweat and your breath gets short when the subject comes up, long before you are anywhere near the thing you fear.

Putting Off Medical Care

Is fear of needles, blood, doctors or dentists keeping you from appointments you know you need? Counseling can help you take small, steady steps back toward care.

Dreading an Upcoming Event

A flight, a surgery, a work trip or a family wedding is on the calendar, and the countdown is filling your days with worry about getting through it.

Missing Out on Moments

You watch others hike the overlook, ride the elevator or swim in the lake while you hang back. It is hard to explain, and harder to keep missing out.

Fear That Keeps Growing

What started as one uneasy situation has spread to more places and more triggers. Each time you avoid it, the fear seems to get a little louder.

Feeling Ashamed of Being Afraid

Have people told you to just get over it? Fear is not a personal failing, and counseling offers a judgment free space to work on it at your own pace.

Answers to Common Questions

Can a phobia go away on its own?

Some childhood fears fade with time, but phobias that last into adulthood often stay the same or grow, because avoiding the fear keeps it strong. Every time you avoid it, your brain learns the danger was real. Counseling works by gently reversing that pattern. If a fear has been around for months or years and is shaping your choices, it is worth talking with a counselor rather than waiting.

Should I take medication for my phobia?

That is a question for your physician, not your counselor. Foundations counselors do not prescribe or advise on medication. Many people with a specific phobia improve with counseling alone, because exposure practice changes how your body responds to the fear. If you and your doctor decide medication has a role, counseling can work alongside it, and the skills you build in sessions stay with you either way.

Does phobia therapy use virtual reality?

Not necessarily. Exposure can be done many ways: talking through a scene, imagining it, looking at photos or video, and then practicing in real life between sessions. Foundations does not promise virtual reality equipment. If a particular tool matters to you, ask when you reach out what your counselor uses, and we will factor that into your match.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can I work on more than one fear at the same time?

Yes. Many people come in with a main fear and a few smaller ones. Your counselor will usually start with the fear that causes the most trouble in daily life, because progress there often makes the others feel more manageable. The skills you practice, such as calming your body and testing scary predictions, carry over from one fear to the next.

What should I tell the counselor when I reach out?

Share what you are afraid of, how long it has been going on, and what you avoid because of it. Mention whether there are deadlines, like an upcoming flight, surgery or job requirement. You do not have to describe it in detail if that feels too hard. A short note is enough for us to match you, and you can share more with your counselor once you are matched.

How many sessions does phobia therapy usually take?

Often fewer than people expect. Specific phobias tend to respond well to exposure based counseling, and many people notice real progress within a handful of sessions, especially when they practice between appointments. Fears that are long standing, involve several triggers, or sit inside broader anxiety or panic can take longer. Your counselor will set goals with you early and check progress along the way.
