What is counseling for healthcare workers at Foundations?

Healthcare worker counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling is one on one talk therapy for nurses, physicians, techs, therapists and other clinical staff dealing with burnout, hard patient outcomes and long shifts. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

Is what I am feeling burnout, or something more?

Mayo Clinic describes job burnout as a type of stress linked to work that includes being worn out physically or emotionally. In healthcare it often shows up as dreading the next shift, feeling cynical or detached from patients you used to care deeply about, and having nothing left for your own family at the end of the day. Burnout can overlap with depression and anxiety, and sometimes it is hard to tell which one is driving the exhaustion. A counselor can help you sort that out and decide what needs to change first.

Why is healthcare work so hard on mental health?

The CDC National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health notes that healthcare workers face challenging working conditions and high stress levels that can lead to poor mental and physical health, and it lists exposure to human suffering and death and long, unpredictable hours among the reasons. Add short staffing, documentation that follows you home, and the expectation that you will be calm and kind no matter what happened in the last room, and the load adds up even for people who love the work.

What about the cases that stay with me?

Some patients stay with you: a code that did not go the way it should have, a child, a death that felt preventable, or a moment when the system made you do something that felt wrong. The VA National Center for PTSD describes moral injury as what can happen after someone takes part in, fails to prevent or witnesses an event that goes against their morals or values, and healthcare workers are among the groups it can affect. Counseling gives you a private place to grieve those cases, look honestly at guilt and responsibility, and stop carrying them alone. If a specific event keeps replaying, trauma counseling may also help.

What does counseling look like for healthcare workers?

Sessions focus on what is real for you right now. Counselors who work with medical professionals often draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to loosen the perfectionism and self criticism that are common in clinical culture, along with stress management skills, sleep routines that work around night shifts, and practical talk about boundaries, career direction and whether your current role still fits. Some people come in for a few months during a rough stretch; others want steady support over a longer career.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list medical personnel among the people they work with. You can meet them in the team section on this page. When you reach out, share your role and what is going on, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the fit is not right, the Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find you another counselor. Because Foundations is a private practice outside your hospital or clinic system, you are unlikely to run into your counselor at work.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado, which can make it easier to fit sessions around twelve hour shifts.

What this page does not cover

If you are thinking about suicide or are worried about a colleague, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy. We do not provide fitness for duty evaluations, monitoring for licensing boards or professional health programs, or medication management; talk with your own physician about medication. Questions about what a licensing application asks you to disclose belong with your board or an attorney.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Dreading the Next Shift

That sinking feeling on the drive in, or the knot in your stomach the night before work, can be a sign that the load has become too heavy.

Running on Empty

Do you give everything to patients and have nothing left for your own family, friends or rest when you finally get home?

Detached From Patients You Care About

Feeling cynical, numb or distant from work you once loved can be confusing and painful, especially when caring is why you chose this field.

Cases That Stay With You

A code that went wrong, a young patient or a death that felt preventable can replay in your mind long after the shift is over.

When the System Felt Wrong

Being forced by staffing, policy or time pressure to give less care than you wanted can leave guilt, anger or moral distress that lingers.

Perfectionism and Self Criticism

In a culture that leaves little room for mistakes, you may hold yourself to impossible standards and replay every small error at night.

Sleep Wrecked by Long Hours

Night shifts, rotating schedules and charting that follows you home can disrupt sleep and make it hard to ever feel truly rested.

Wondering Whether to Leave

Are you questioning whether you can keep doing this work? It can help to sort out what needs to change before making a big decision about your career.

Calm on the Outside Only

You are expected to stay composed in every room, but holding it together all day can leave anxiety, sadness or anger with nowhere to go.

Answers to Common Questions

Will my employer know I am seeing a counselor?

No, not from us. Foundations is an independent private practice, separate from any hospital or clinic, and you reach out directly. What you share stays between you and your counselor, with the legal exceptions every counselor follows, such as an immediate risk of harm. Your counselor explains those limits in the first session, and any release of information happens only with your written consent.

Can I see a counselor if I work nights or rotating shifts?

Often, yes. Online sessions anywhere in Colorado make it easier to meet before or after a shift without a commute, and counselors keep a range of appointment times. Share your schedule when you reach out, and we will look for a counselor whose availability fits yours so counseling does not cost you the sleep you need.

Is it normal to feel numb or detached from patients?

It is common, and it is worth paying attention to. Emotional distance can start as a way to cope with constant suffering, then spread into how you feel about your family and yourself. It does not mean you are a bad clinician. Counseling can help you understand what the numbness is protecting and find ways to reconnect without being overwhelmed.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Should I leave healthcare, or is this a season I can get through?

That is a common question, and there is no single right answer. Some people need a different unit, schedule or role, not a different career; others are ready for a real change. Counseling helps you separate exhaustion from long term fit, so the decision comes from clear thinking instead of a bad week. Foundations also offers career focused counseling.

Do you work with students and new grads in healthcare?

Yes. Nursing and medical students, residents and new graduates often face the same pressures with less experience and support, plus exams, debt and the shock of first patient losses. Counseling can help with anxiety, impostor feelings and building habits that make a long career sustainable. Tell us where you are in training when you reach out.

Will seeing a counselor affect my professional license?

Foundations does not report your counseling to anyone. We are an independent private practice, and because we do not bill insurance, no claim or diagnosis goes to an insurer or employer. Records are released only with your written consent or under narrow legal exceptions. Licensing applications vary, so if you have a question about a specific disclosure form, check with your board or an attorney.
