What are attachment issues?

Attachment is the emotional bond we form with the people we depend on. Cleveland Clinic describes attachment styles as the way our primary caregivers interacted with us as infants, and how those interactions affect our relationships in adulthood. It names four broad styles: secure, anxious, avoidant and disorganized. "Attachment issues" is not a diagnosis here. It is a plain way of saying that closeness feels risky, confusing or exhausting, and that the same relationship pattern keeps showing up with different people.

How do I know attachment patterns are affecting my relationships?

People usually come in describing what happens, not a style. Common examples:

  • You worry a partner or friend is pulling away, and a slow text reply can ruin your day.
  • You go quiet or leave when someone gets close or when conflict starts.
  • You give much more than you get, and say yes when you mean no.
  • You want closeness and fear it at the same time, so relationships feel like a push and pull.

The CDC notes that children growing up with toxic stress may have difficulty forming healthy and stable relationships. Early experience matters, but it is not the whole story, and it is not a life sentence.

How does attachment focused counseling work?

Your counselor helps you connect today's reactions with the history behind them, without blaming you or your family. Together you notice what happens in your body and thoughts when you feel unsure of someone, and you practice responses that fit the present instead of the past. The counseling relationship itself becomes a safe place to try being honest about needs. Some Foundations counselors describe their work as attachment based therapy. If the pattern lives mostly inside a couple, couples counseling and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) focus on the bond between partners. If you tend to lose yourself in caring for others, codependency counseling may also help.

Can attachment styles change in adulthood?

Yes. Cleveland Clinic states that changing your attachment style is possible and that it starts with self awareness. In counseling, change usually looks gradual: you catch the old reaction a little sooner, recover a little faster, and choose people and responses that feel steadier. Many people describe this as moving toward a more secure way of relating, often called earned security.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list attachment issues as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the first match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who fits better.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

Safety and what this page does not cover

Outpatient counseling is not crisis care. If you are thinking about suicide or are in emotional distress, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger. If a relationship involves fear, threats or harm, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 1.800.799.7233, and our abuse therapy page explains how counseling can help. This page does not cover formal evaluation of attachment disorders in young children; your pediatrician can help you find specialized assessment. If attachment struggles grew out of trauma, see trauma therapy.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Fear of Being Left

Do you brace for people to pull away, reading a slow reply or a quiet evening as a sign they are losing interest? That worry can take over a whole day.

Pulling Away When It Gets Close

When someone starts to matter, you go quiet, get busy or find a reason to leave. Distance feels safer, even when part of you wants the connection.

Wanting Closeness and Fearing It

You long for someone to know you, and the moment they get near, you feel trapped or exposed. Relationships turn into a tiring push and pull.

The Same Pattern, Different People

New partner, new friend, same ending. You notice the story keeps repeating, and you are not sure why you keep landing in it.

Giving More Than You Get

You say yes when you mean no, keep the peace at your own expense, and quietly wonder whether anyone would stay if you stopped trying so hard.

Hard to Trust Anyone

Even kind people feel risky. You keep part of yourself hidden and wait for the catch, which leaves you lonely in relationships that look fine from outside.

Big Reactions to Small Moments

A forgotten plan or a short tone can hit like rejection. Afterward you may feel embarrassed that it hurt so much, and unsure where the feeling came from.

Echoes of How You Grew Up

Have you noticed your relationships carry the feel of your childhood home? Counseling offers a calm place to connect today's reactions with where you first learned to love.

Hiding Your Own Needs

Naming a need feels like too much, so you hint, wait or go without. Then resentment builds, and the people close to you never quite know what is wrong.

Answers to Common Questions

Can I work on attachment issues without my partner in the room?

Yes. Most attachment work happens in individual counseling. You learn your own pattern, what sets it off and how to respond differently, and that often changes how a relationship feels even when only one person attends. If you and your partner both want to work on the bond later, a Foundations counselor can talk with you about whether couples counseling makes sense.

Can attachment problems start in adulthood?

Childhood shapes how we connect, but later experiences matter too. A betrayal, a painful breakup, a loss or a long stretch of loneliness can leave someone more guarded or more anxious in relationships than they used to be. Counseling looks at whatever history is relevant to you, recent or early, rather than assuming every pattern began in childhood.

What if I start feeling attached to my counselor, or want to pull away?

That is common and it is useful. Attachment patterns tend to show up in the counseling relationship as well, such as worrying your counselor is annoyed with you or wanting to cancel when things get close. Saying so out loud gives you a low risk place to practice being honest about needs, which is much of the work itself.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

How long does attachment focused counseling usually take?

It varies. Some people notice real shifts within a few months of regular sessions, while deeper patterns rooted in early experiences often take longer. Your counselor will set goals with you, check progress along the way, and talk openly about whether the pace is working. You decide how often to meet and when you feel ready to stop.

Can attachment focused counseling be done online?

Yes. Foundations offers secure online sessions anywhere in Colorado, along with in person sessions in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor. Attachment work happens mostly through conversation and the relationship with your counselor, both of which translate well to video. Some people find it easier to open up from home at first, and you can switch formats later if the other feels better.
