What is spirituality counseling at Foundations?

Spirituality counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling is talk therapy for people of any faith, or none, who want room to explore belief, doubt, meaning or religious hurt alongside anxiety, grief or life changes. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

This page is non denominational. Your counselor follows your lead about how much spirituality belongs in sessions and does not bring in beliefs of their own. If you want counseling that integrates Christian faith, scripture or prayer, see our Christian counseling page and mention it when you reach out so we can match you well.

What does spirituality counseling help with?

People reach out for many different reasons. Some of the most common:

  • Questioning or leaving the faith you grew up with, or finding your way back to one
  • Hurt, fear or shame from experiences in a religious community, which sometimes overlaps with trauma counseling
  • A loss that raises questions about death, meaning or what comes next, often alongside grief counseling
  • Conflict between your beliefs and those of a partner, a family or your own sense of identity
  • Guilt or worry that feels tied to religious teaching, which can feed anxiety
  • Wanting purpose, peace or connection that is not tied to any one religion

Is spirituality the same as religion?

Not necessarily. NAMI explains that religion is an organized, community based system of beliefs, while spirituality lives within the individual and what they personally believe. Many people hold both. Some hold one without the other, and some are not sure yet. Spirituality counseling at Foundations makes room for all of those places.

Will my counselor push their own beliefs on me?

No. Your counselor's job is to understand what your beliefs mean to you, not to change them. Some people want to draw on prayer, meditation, ritual, nature or community as sources of strength. Others want a safe place to question those things. NAMI notes that spirituality, religion and faith can help some people live well with mental health conditions, and that people who are not comfortable with organized religion can still find relaxation and meaning in their experiences. Your counselor works with whatever is true for you.

How does a counselor bring spirituality into therapy?

Mostly through ordinary talk therapy, with your beliefs treated as part of the picture instead of something to leave at the door. That can mean exploring how your faith or worldview shapes the way you see a loss, a decision or yourself; noticing where belief brings comfort and where it brings fear; and practicing grounding tools, such as slow breathing or quiet reflection, that fit your values. Some Foundations counselors also use approaches that explore spiritual experience more directly. The National Institute of Mental Health describes psychotherapy as treatment that helps a person identify and change troubling emotions, thoughts and behaviors, and says rapport and trust are essential. That trust matters even more when the subject is as personal as faith.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list religion and spirituality as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out by calling 970.227.2770 or booking online, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What spirituality counseling does not cover

Foundations counselors are not clergy. They do not offer religious instruction, spiritual direction or rulings on doctrine, and they will not tell you what to believe. If you want guidance from within your tradition, a pastor, priest, rabbi, imam or other faith leader can walk alongside your counseling. Counseling here is outpatient and is not crisis care. If you are thinking about suicide or feel unsafe, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Questioning Your Faith

Are you wondering whether the beliefs you grew up with still fit? Doubt is a natural part of a spiritual life, and counseling offers room to explore it without judgment.

Hurt From a Faith Community

Carrying shame, fear or anger from experiences in a church or religious group, and finding that those memories still shape how you see yourself and others.

Feeling Spiritually Lost

A sense that the meaning or connection you once felt has gone quiet, leaving you unsure what you believe or where to look for steadiness.

Grief That Raises Big Questions

A loss can stir questions about death, purpose and what comes next. Counseling can help you hold those questions alongside the grief itself.

Beliefs That Divide a Family

Tension with a partner, parents or children because your beliefs have changed or never matched, making holidays, parenting and everyday conversations feel strained.

Searching for Meaning

Do you feel like something is missing even when life looks fine from the outside? Many people want to understand what truly matters to them and how to live by it.

Guilt You Cannot Shake

Persistent guilt or fear of having done wrong, sometimes rooted in religious teachings, that lingers long after you have tried to let it go.

Leaving or Returning to Faith

Stepping away from a tradition, or finding your way back to one, can bring loneliness, relief and confusion all at once. It helps to talk it through openly.

Wanting Your Beliefs Respected

Do you worry a counselor might dismiss your beliefs or push their own? You deserve a space where your spirituality, or lack of it, is taken seriously and followed at your pace.

Answers to Common Questions

Can I come to spirituality counseling if I am not religious?

Yes. Many people who reach out describe themselves as spiritual but not religious, agnostic, atheist or simply unsure. Spirituality counseling at Foundations is about what gives your life meaning and steadiness, whatever form that takes. You never have to adopt a belief, practice or vocabulary to belong here, and your counselor will use the words that feel right to you.

Is it okay to talk about doubts or leaving my faith?

Yes. Doubt and faith changes are some of the most common reasons people look for this kind of counseling. Your counselor will not steer you toward staying or leaving. The focus is on what you are experiencing, how it affects your relationships and sense of self, and what you want next. Many people find it a relief to say these things out loud for the first time.

Can my partner and I get help if we have different beliefs?

Yes. Differences in faith can surface around marriage, parenting, holidays or family expectations. Foundations offers couples counseling where a counselor helps you both understand what your beliefs mean to each of you and find workable agreements, without taking a side on who is right. Mention the faith difference when you reach out so we can match you with a counselor who fits both of you.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

What if I want counseling that is specifically Christian?

Then our Christian counseling page is the better starting point. That service integrates Christian faith, scripture and prayer into therapy for people who want it. Spirituality counseling is non denominational and does not assume any one tradition. Either way, tell us what you are looking for when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor whose approach fits.

Do I have to talk about spirituality in every session?

No. You decide how much of each session touches on faith or meaning. Some people come in to talk mainly about spiritual questions. Others come for anxiety, grief or a relationship issue and simply want a counselor who will not dismiss the role their beliefs play. Your counselor will check in with you and adjust as your needs change.

Can spirituality counseling help with religious trauma?

Yes. Hurt, fear or shame from a religious community can affect sleep, relationships, self worth and how you feel about faith itself. Your counselor will not push you toward or away from belief. Together you can make sense of what happened, ease guilt or fear tied to old teachings, and decide what you want to keep. If flashbacks or constant alertness are part of it, our trauma therapy page explains that work.
