What is disability counseling at Foundations?
Disability counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling offers emotional support and coping for people with intellectual or physical disabilities and their families, with sessions adapted to how each person communicates and learns. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.
Who is disability counseling for?
The CDC defines a disability as any condition of the body or mind that makes it more difficult to do certain activities and interact with the world around you, and reports that more than 1 in 4 U.S. adults have some type of disability. This page is for people with intellectual disabilities, people with physical disabilities present from birth or acquired later through illness or injury, and the parents, partners and siblings who love them. You do not have to come in because of your disability. Many people simply want a counselor who will not make it the whole story, or who will not need it explained from scratch.
What do people bring to disability counseling?
The CDC notes that people with disabilities report higher rates of stress and depression than people without disabilities. Often that stress comes less from the disability itself than from the world around it: inaccessible places, being talked over, low expectations, isolation, or fighting for services. Common reasons to start counseling include
- anxiety, low mood, loneliness or low self worth
- adjusting after a new diagnosis, injury or change in ability
- friendships, dating, family conflict and independence
- transitions such as leaving school, starting work or moving out
How is counseling adapted for intellectual disabilities?
Counselors who work with intellectual disabilities adjust the pace and style of sessions instead of expecting the person to adjust. That can mean plain language, shorter sessions or check ins, visual aids, practicing skills through role play, and repeating ideas in different ways. With the client's agreement, a parent, support person or caregiver can join part of the session to help carry skills into daily life. The goal is the same as any counseling: feeling better and having more say in your own life.
What about adjusting to a physical disability later in life?
Losing mobility, sight, hearing or strength after an illness or injury can bring grief, anger and questions about identity, work and relationships. Counseling makes room for that loss without treating you as broken, and helps you rebuild routines, ask for what you need, and find what still feels like you. If ongoing pain is part of the picture, a counselor can address that too, and if the change came from a frightening event, trauma therapy may help.
Is there support for parents and families?
Yes. Parents and caregivers often carry worry about the future, exhaustion from advocacy, and grief they feel guilty about. Siblings can feel overlooked. Family therapy helps everyone talk about those feelings and share the load, and parents can also come on their own through individual therapy.
Who will I work with?
Many Foundations counselors list intellectual or physical disabilities as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you or your family member needs when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Mention any access, communication or sensory needs so we can plan for them. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.
Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.
What does disability counseling at Foundations not cover?
Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy for emotional support and coping. Counselors do not provide disability evaluations, diagnostic or IQ testing, applied behavior analysis, or evaluations for benefits, guardianship or school services, and they do not give medication advice. Your physician, school district or county disability services can point you to those. If you are thinking about suicide or feel you cannot stay safe, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Do You Feel...
What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.
Adjusting to a Change in Ability
An illness or injury has changed what your body can do. You may feel grief, anger or uncertainty about work, relationships and who you are now.
Feeling Talked Over
Do people speak to your companion instead of you, or decide what you can handle without asking? Being overlooked again and again wears on your sense of self.
Lonely and Left Out
Inaccessible places, canceled plans and missed invitations can slowly shrink your social world. Loneliness can grow even when people care about you.
Tired of Fighting for Access
Calls, forms, appointments and advocacy take time and energy you would rather spend living. That constant effort can leave you frustrated and drained.
Doubting Your Own Worth
Low expectations from others can start to sound like your own voice. You may feel like a burden or question what you have to offer.
Wanting More Independence
You want more say in your own life, from daily choices to where you live and work. Navigating that with family and support people can be complicated.
Big Life Transitions
Leaving school, starting a job, moving out or changing services can bring excitement and worry at the same time. Counseling can help you plan and cope.
A Parent's Quiet Worries
Are you carrying worry about your child's future, exhaustion from advocating, or grief you feel guilty about? Parents need room to talk about those feelings too.
Stress That Spills Into Mood
Ongoing stress can show up as anxiety, low mood, irritability or trouble sleeping. Those feelings deserve care, whatever their source.
