What is infertility counseling at Foundations?

Infertility counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling supports individuals and couples through trying to conceive, fertility treatment, pregnancy loss and hard family building decisions, with room for grief, stress and strain on the relationship. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

Why does infertility hit so hard emotionally?

Infertility is common, and it is still lonely. The CDC reports that about 1 in 5 married women aged 15 to 49 with no prior births are unable to get pregnant after a year of trying. Each month can become a cycle of hope, waiting and disappointment, often while friends announce pregnancies and family members ask when you are having kids. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine notes that the long term inability to conceive a child can evoke significant feelings of loss, along with anxiety, depression and strained relationships. None of that means you are coping badly. It means you are carrying something heavy.

What does infertility counseling actually help with?

Counseling is a place to say the things that feel hard to say anywhere else: jealousy, anger at your body, guilt, or fear that this will never happen. Sessions can help you

  • manage the stress and anxiety of tests, procedures, waiting periods and results
  • grieve losses, including miscarriage, failed cycles and the family you pictured
  • handle questions from family, friends and coworkers in a way that protects you
  • make treatment decisions, including when to pause, change course or stop

Counselors work with your emotional life, not your medical plan, so you can bring whatever is on your mind without worrying about what your clinic will think.

How can counseling help us as a couple?

Partners rarely experience infertility the same way. One may want to talk constantly and the other may go quiet. You may disagree about how much treatment to try, how much money to spend, or whether to consider donor options, adoption or a life without children. Counseling helps you hear each other and make decisions as a team. If the strain has spread into the rest of your relationship, our couples counseling page explains that work.

When is it a good time to start?

Any time. Some people come in before their first appointment with a fertility clinic, some in the middle of treatment, and some after they have stopped trying. ASRM suggests that talking with a mental health professional can help when you are at a treatment crossroad or when you and your partner see the next step differently. You do not need to wait until you feel at your breaking point.

What about after a pregnancy, adoption or loss?

Feelings do not always settle once a pregnancy finally happens. Anxiety during a pregnancy after loss is common, and some people find low mood or worry after the baby arrives. If that sounds familiar, see postpartum depression treatment. If grief from a loss is the main thing you are carrying, grief therapy may help.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list fertility issues as a specialty. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us a little about where you are in the process when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. Individuals and couples are both welcome. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What does infertility counseling at Foundations not cover?

Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy. Counselors do not give medical advice about fertility treatment or medication, and they do not provide the screening or evaluations some clinics require for donor or gestational carrier arrangements; ask your fertility clinic who handles those. Foundations offers one on one and couples counseling; if you want peer connection, RESOLVE lists community support groups separately. If you are thinking about suicide or feel you cannot stay safe, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

The Monthly Cycle of Hope

Each month brings hope, waiting and then disappointment. Riding that cycle again and again can leave you exhausted and wary of hoping at all.

Grieving a Loss Others Miss

A miscarriage, a failed cycle or the family you pictured is a real loss. It can feel lonely when the people around you do not quite see it.

Hard Feelings at Announcements

Does a friend's pregnancy news or a baby shower invitation bring a wave of sadness or jealousy? Those feelings are normal, and they do not make you a bad friend.

Tension With Your Partner

One of you wants to talk about it constantly, the other goes quiet. Disagreements about treatment, money or next steps can leave you feeling far apart.

Stress of Tests and Waiting

Appointments, procedures and long waits for results take over your calendar and your thoughts. It can be hard to focus on work or anything else.

Angry at Your Body

You may feel betrayed by your body, or blame yourself for timing, choices or something you cannot name. That self blame adds weight to an already heavy road.

Tired of the Questions

When family, friends or coworkers ask when you are having kids, you are not sure what to say. Every question can sting, even when it is meant kindly.

Facing Hard Decisions

Should you keep going, take a break, change course or stop? Counseling can help you sort through your values and hopes so the choice feels like yours.

Worry Even After Good News

A positive test or a growing pregnancy can bring fear instead of relief. After so much loss, it can be hard to trust that things will be okay.

Answers to Common Questions

Can I come to infertility counseling without my partner?

Yes. Many people start on their own, either because their partner is not ready or because they want a space that is just theirs. You can work on stress, grief and decisions individually, and invite your partner to some sessions later if that would help. Single people pursuing parenthood on their own are welcome too.

Is it normal to feel jealous when friends get pregnant?

Yes, and it is one of the most common things people bring to infertility counseling. Jealousy, sadness and even avoiding baby showers are normal reactions to a painful situation, not signs that you are a bad friend. A counselor can help you decide which events to attend, what to say, and how to care for yourself when announcements land hard.

Can counseling help me decide when to stop fertility treatment?

It can. Deciding when to pause or stop is one of the hardest parts of infertility, and there is no single right answer. Your counselor will not make the decision for you or give medical advice, but can help you sort through your values, finances, health and hopes so the choice feels like yours rather than something that just happened.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Do you help with secondary infertility?

Yes. Struggling to conceive after already having a child brings its own mix of feelings: gratitude, grief, guilt, and the sense that others do not take the pain seriously. Counseling makes room for all of it, and can help you balance parenting the child you have with the loss of the family size you hoped for.

Can counseling help with fear during a pregnancy after infertility or loss?

Yes. Many people expect relief once they are pregnant and instead feel constant worry, waiting for the next appointment to confirm things are okay. Counseling can help you manage that anxiety, stay connected to the pregnancy, and plan for support after birth. Your prenatal care team remains the right place for any medical questions.

Can counseling help us decide about donor eggs, sperm or a gestational carrier?

Yes. Choices about donor eggs, sperm or embryos, a gestational carrier, adoption or stopping treatment raise big questions about genetics, privacy, money and what family means to you. A counselor can help you sort through them without steering you. If your clinic requires a formal evaluation for a donor or carrier arrangement, ask the clinic what it needs, and ask us when you reach out whether a counselor can meet it.
