This page is about individual counseling for any kind of relationship. If you and a partner want to come in together, see couples counseling or marriage counseling.

What relationship problems can individual counseling help with?

  • Boundaries: saying no without guilt, and noticing when you have taken on too much.
  • Communication: getting your point across without shutting down or blowing up.
  • Conflict: repeated fights with a parent, sibling, roommate, coworker or friend.
  • High conflict relationships: staying steady with an ex, co-parent or family member who escalates.
  • Isolation: feeling lonely, or unsure how to build friendships as an adult.
  • Dating: choosing partners, spotting red flags early, and getting past old relationship patterns.

Why work on relationships on my own?

Often the other person will not come, cannot come, or is not someone you would bring to counseling, like a boss or a parent. You can still change a great deal. When one person responds differently, the pattern between two people usually shifts. Individual work also gives you space to sort out what you want before you decide whether to repair, renegotiate or step back from a relationship.

How do counselors help with communication and boundaries?

Sessions are practical. Your counselor helps you name what you need, put it into words that are clear and kind, and rehearse the conversation before you have it. You learn to notice when you are getting flooded, take a break, and come back. The National Domestic Violence Hotline describes healthy relationships as ones where people talk openly about problems, listen to one another, and respect each other's need for time and space. Counseling helps you build that from your side, and recognize when the other person is not meeting you there. If you tend to lose yourself in other people's needs, codependency counseling goes deeper.

Can counseling help with loneliness and isolation?

Yes. The CDC defines loneliness as feeling alone or disconnected from others, and social isolation as having little to no contact or social support. It links both to higher risk of depression, anxiety and heart disease. Counseling helps you understand what is keeping you disconnected, such as social anxiety, a move, grief or past hurt, and take small, realistic steps toward people.

Who will I work with?

Several Foundations counselors list relationships, communication, boundaries or high conflict as specialties. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the first match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who fits better.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

Safety and what this page does not cover

If a relationship involves fear, threats, control or violence, your safety comes first. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1.800.799.7233, and see our abuse therapy page. If you are thinking about suicide, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. Foundations does not give legal advice, mediate disputes, or make custody recommendations; talk with an attorney for those.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Saying Yes When You Mean No

You agree to things you do not want to do, then feel resentful or worn out. Setting a limit feels selfish, even when you know you need one.

The Same Fight Again

Conversations with a parent, sibling, partner or friend keep circling back to the same argument. Nothing seems to change, and you are tired of it.

Shutting Down or Blowing Up

When a talk gets tense, you either go quiet or say things you regret. Getting your point across calmly feels nearly impossible.

Feeling Lonely and Disconnected

You may have people around you and still feel alone, or find it hard to build friendships as an adult. Connection feels just out of reach.

Stuck in a High Conflict Relationship

An ex, co-parent or family member escalates every exchange. Staying steady and protecting your peace takes more energy than you have.

Dating Patterns That Repeat

Do you keep choosing partners who leave you feeling the same way? Spotting red flags earlier and breaking old patterns can feel confusing.

Tension With a Boss or Coworker

A difficult work relationship follows you home. Criticism, unclear expectations or constant requests leave you dreading the next meeting.

Unsure Whether to Stay or Go

You are torn about a relationship and cannot tell if it can be repaired. Counseling offers a calm place to sort out what you want without pressure.

Doubting Your Own Feelings

Are you often told you are too sensitive or that your needs are too much? Learning to trust your own read on situations can change how you show up.

Answers to Common Questions

Can counseling help me make friends as an adult?

Yes. Making friends after school, a move or a breakup is hard for many adults. Your counselor can help you figure out what gets in the way, such as anxiety, shyness, past rejection or a busy schedule, and plan small steps like reaching out to one person or joining an activity. You set the pace and the goals.

How do I know if I am being too sensitive or someone is crossing a line?

That question comes up often, especially for people who grew up being told their feelings were too much. A counselor can help you look at specific situations, sort out what you felt from what happened, and decide what is reasonable to ask for. Over time you learn to trust your own read on things.

Can teens get counseling for friendship and dating problems?

Yes. Some Foundations counselors work with teens on friendships, dating, peer conflict and family tension. Teens can learn to set limits, handle drama and spot unhealthy relationships early. Parents can reach out to start the process, and the counselor will talk with the family about how privacy works for teen clients.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

What if my relationship problem is with my boss or a coworker?

Work relationships count. Counseling can help you prepare for a difficult conversation, respond to criticism without spiraling, set limits on after hours requests, and decide whether a situation is fixable. Your counselor will not contact your employer; the work is about how you handle it and what you want to do next.

Should I decide whether to end a relationship before starting counseling?

No. Many people come in precisely because they are unsure. Counseling gives you a calm place to look at what is working, what is not, and what you want, without pressure in either direction. Your counselor will not tell you to stay or leave; they help you reach a decision you can live with.
