Solution-focused brief therapy in Fort Collins and Loveland at Foundations Counseling helps you get clear on what you want to be different and build on what already works, rather than dwelling on where a problem came from. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What is solution-focused brief therapy?

Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) puts your goals and your existing strengths at the center. A federal guide to brief therapies describes the approach as emphasizing solutions to a problem rather than discovering its cause or origins, focusing on competence rather than pathology, and looking to the client as the expert. In plain terms, your counselor is less interested in diagnosing what is wrong with you and more interested in what a better week would look like and what you are already doing that helps.

What is the miracle question?

It is one of the most familiar SFBT tools. Your counselor might ask: if a miracle happened overnight and the problem were gone, what would you notice tomorrow? What would you do differently, and who would notice first? The answer is not about magic. It turns a vague wish to feel better into concrete, visible signs of change you can start working toward this week.

How do scaling questions and exceptions work?

Scaling questions ask you to rate where things stand on a 0 to 10 scale, then ask what puts you at a 4 and not a 2, and what a 5 would look like. Exceptions are the times the problem is smaller or absent. Your counselor will ask about those times in detail, because they show what already works for you. Small steps that build on those moments tend to be easier to keep than a complete overhaul.

How brief is brief?

The same federal guide notes that these strategic and interactional therapies often run about 6 to 10 weekly sessions, with 6 considered typical. That is a starting point, not a rule. Some people reach their goal sooner, and others use SFBT inside longer counseling for concerns like depression or stress. Your counselor will check progress with you so you always know where you stand.

Who will I work with?

Some Foundations counselors use solution-focused brief therapy in their work. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the first match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast) and Loveland, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What does solution-focused brief therapy at Foundations not cover?

If you are thinking about suicide or are in emotional crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy, so it is not the right fit for an active crisis, and it does not include medication, psychiatry or emergency care. Questions about medication belong with your physician. SFBT is a present and future focused approach. If you need to work through trauma at a slower pace, ask about trauma counseling instead, and we will point you to the right kind of care.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Stuck in the Same Place

You know something needs to change, but every conversation about it circles back to the problem itself instead of moving you anywhere new or helping you decide what to do next.

Wanting Practical Progress

Do you want counseling that focuses on what to do next, rather than spending months retracing where things went wrong? A goal centered approach can feel like a real relief.

Unclear About What You Want

Are you sure things need to be different but unsure what better would actually look like? Putting words to a clearer picture is often the first real step forward.

Overwhelmed by a Life Transition

A new job, a move, a breakup or a growing family can leave you scrambling. Focusing on small, workable next steps can make a big change feel more manageable.

Work Stress That Keeps Building

Deadlines, difficult coworkers or a job that no longer fits can follow you home every night, leaving you tired and short on patience with the people you love.

Forgetting What Already Works

When you have been struggling for a while, it is easy to overlook the days that went a little better and the things you did that actually helped.

A Habit You Want to Change

Maybe it is procrastination, scrolling late into the night or snapping at your family. You have tried willpower alone, and you are ready for a more practical plan.

Tired of Retelling Your Story

Have you already talked through the hardest parts of your past and still feel stuck? Some people want sessions that spend more of their time on what comes next.

Family Tension at Home

Arguments with a teen, a partner or a parent can start to feel like the same fight on repeat, and everyone ends up feeling unheard and worn out.

Answers to Common Questions

Does solution-focused therapy ignore my problems?

No. Your counselor will listen to what is going wrong and take it seriously. The difference is where most of the session time goes: toward what you want instead, what has helped before and the next small step. Many people find this lifts some of the weight, because they are not retelling the hardest parts of their story every week.

Who is solution-focused brief therapy a good fit for?

It often suits people who have a fairly clear concern and want practical movement, such as a life transition, work stress, a relationship pattern or a habit they want to change. It is also used with teens and families. If you are not sure what you want yet, that is fine too. Figuring out the goal is part of the work.

What if I cannot think of any exceptions?

That is common, especially when you have been struggling for a while. Your counselor will ask small, specific questions, such as which part of the day is a little easier or what got you through last week. Even tiny differences count. Noticing them usually gets easier with practice, and they become the starting point for change.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can solution-focused therapy be combined with other approaches?

Yes. Many counselors use solution focused questions alongside other methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy, especially when you want both practical goals and skills for handling thoughts and emotions. Tell us when you reach out what you are hoping for, and your counselor will shape the approach around you rather than fit you to one method.

Can solution-focused brief therapy be done online?

Yes. Foundations offers secure online sessions anywhere in Colorado, and solution-focused work suits video well because it is built on conversation: describing what you want instead, rating progress on a scale and planning the next small step. In person sessions are available in Fort Collins and Loveland. You can start in either format and switch later.
