What is person-centered therapy?

Person-centered therapy is also called client-centered or Rogerian therapy. According to a National Library of Medicine review, it was pioneered by Carl Rogers in the early 1940s and emphasizes reflective listening, empathy and acceptance rather than interpreting behaviors or unconscious drives. The same review describes the client as the expert in their own life, who leads the general direction of therapy. Your counselor is not there to hand you a plan. They are there to help you hear yourself more clearly.

What makes humanistic therapy different?

Humanistic approaches, including person-centered therapy, start from the belief that people have a natural capacity to grow when the conditions are right. Three conditions get the most attention: empathy, where your counselor tries to understand your world as you experience it; unconditional positive regard, where you are accepted without having to earn it; and genuineness, where your counselor is real with you rather than hiding behind a role. In practice, sessions feel less like instruction and more like a deeply attentive conversation.

What can person-centered therapy help with?

People often choose it when they feel stuck, disconnected from what they want, or worn down by trying to meet everyone else's expectations. It can be part of counseling for self-esteem, anxiety, depression and big life transitions. Many counselors weave it together with more structured methods, so you get both a safe relationship and practical tools when you want them.

Why does the relationship matter so much?

In person-centered work, the relationship is the main tool. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that rapport and trust are essential in therapy, because discussions are deeply personal and you need to feel comfortable with your therapist. That is why Foundations matches you with a counselor before your first meeting, and why you can ask for a different fit at any time.

Who will I work with?

Some Foundations counselors use person-centered or humanistic approaches in their work. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the first match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What does person-centered therapy at Foundations not cover?

If you are thinking about suicide or are in emotional crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy, so it is not the right fit for an active crisis, and it does not include medication, psychiatry or emergency care. Questions about medication belong with your physician. If you want a highly structured, skills first plan, approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or DBT may suit you better, and your counselor can blend them in.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Feeling Unheard

Do you rarely get to finish a thought before someone offers advice or changes the subject? Being truly listened to can feel unfamiliar, and deeply needed.

Losing Touch With Yourself

After years of meeting everyone else's expectations, you may no longer know what you actually want, feel or believe when no one else is in the room.

A Harsh Inner Critic

A constant voice tells you that you are not enough, that you should have done better, or that others would leave if they really knew you.

Fear of Being Judged

Worry about how others see you can keep you quiet, guarded or performing, even with people who care about you, and leave you feeling quietly alone.

Wanting to Set Your Own Pace

Are you tired of being told what to do? Counseling can offer room to set the pace, choose the topics and find answers that fit your own life.

Low Self-Worth

You may feel that love and approval have to be earned, and that resting, saying no or making mistakes makes you less worthy of care.

Searching for Personal Growth

Nothing is exactly wrong, yet you sense there is more to you than how you have been living. You want space to grow into who you are becoming.

Second-Guessing Yourself

Even small decisions can feel shaky when you doubt your own judgment and look to others for the right answer before you let yourself choose.

Carrying Feelings Alone

Grief, anger or sadness you have never felt safe to share can sit heavy for years. A warm, accepting space can make it easier to finally say it out loud.

Answers to Common Questions

Will my counselor just listen, or will they give advice?

Person-centered counselors listen more than they advise, because the aim is to help you find answers that fit your own life. That does not mean silence. Your counselor will reflect back what they hear, ask questions and share honest observations. If you want more direct suggestions, say so, and many counselors will blend in practical tools.

Is person-centered therapy evidence based?

Its core ideas, such as empathy and a strong working relationship, are among the most studied parts of counseling, and the relationship between client and counselor is widely seen as one of the most important factors in how therapy goes. Ask your counselor how they use the approach and what other methods they blend in for your goals.

Does unconditional positive regard mean my counselor agrees with everything?

No. It means your counselor accepts you as a person without conditions, not that they approve of every choice. They can care about you and still be honest about patterns that are hurting you. Many people find that feeling accepted first is what makes it possible to look at hard things without shutting down.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can person-centered therapy be done online?

Yes. The approach is built on conversation, listening and trust, all of which can happen over video. Foundations offers online counseling anywhere in Colorado, and in person sessions at our Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor offices. Let us know which you prefer when you reach out and we will factor it into your match.

How is person-centered therapy different from CBT?

Cognitive behavioral therapy is structured: your counselor helps you identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, often with exercises between sessions. Person-centered therapy is less structured. You lead the conversation, and change comes through being deeply heard and accepted. Neither is better for everyone. Many counselors blend the two, offering a supportive relationship plus practical tools, so tell us which style appeals to you when you reach out.
