What is strength-based therapy at Foundations?

Strength-based therapy in Fort Collins and Loveland at Foundations Counseling helps you identify the skills, values, relationships and resilience you already have and use them to handle what is hard right now. It is warm, practical talk therapy. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What is strength-based therapy?

Strength-based therapy is less a single technique than a way of working. A published review on mental health recovery describes the strengths-based approach as one that moves the focus away from a person's deficits and toward their strengths and resources. Your counselor still takes your struggles seriously. They also pay close attention to what has helped you survive so far, what you care about, and who is in your corner, because those are the materials change is built from.

How is it different from problem focused counseling?

Many people come to counseling expecting to talk mostly about what is wrong. In strength-based work, a session might start there and then ask: When did you handle something like this before? What did you do? What would the people who know you best say you are good at? These questions are not about forced positivity. They help you see options you may have stopped noticing when things got hard.

Where does positive psychology fit in?

Some Foundations counselors also draw on ideas from positive psychology, the study of what helps people do well, such as gratitude, hope, meaning and using personal strengths in daily life. Used in counseling, these ideas sit alongside honest work on pain and loss. They are not a substitute for it. Your counselor will not ask you to look on the bright side of something that hurts.

What can strength-based therapy help with?

It can be part of counseling for low self-esteem, depression, life transitions and burnout, and it is often used with children and teens, who respond well to hearing what they do well. Many counselors blend it with goal focused and skills based approaches.

Who will I work with?

Some Foundations counselors use a strength-based approach in their work. You can meet them in the team section on this page, or tell us what you need when you reach out and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the first match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast) and Loveland, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

The National Institute of Mental Health notes that rapport and trust are essential in therapy, which is why the match comes first.

What does strength-based therapy at Foundations not cover?

If you are thinking about suicide or are in emotional crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Foundations offers outpatient talk therapy, so it is not the right fit for an active crisis, and it does not include medication, psychiatry or emergency care. Questions about medication belong with your physician. It also does not include psychological testing or evaluations for a court, school or employer. Tell us what is going on when you reach out and we will point you to the right kind of care.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Losing Sight of Your Strengths

When life gets hard, it is easy to see only what is going wrong and forget the skills, values and people that have carried you through before.

Feeling Defined by Problems

Do you feel like a list of things to fix? Counseling can help you see the fuller picture, including what you do well and what you care about.

Low Confidence

Self-doubt can make every choice feel risky. You may hold back at work, in relationships or with new opportunities because you are not sure you can handle them.

Worn Down by a Hard Season

Months of stress, loss or change can leave you running on empty and unsure how much more you can carry, even though you keep showing up.

Discouraged After Setbacks

A plan that fell apart, a lost job or a relationship that ended can shake your belief in yourself and make it harder to try again.

Struggling to Bounce Back

Have you always been the steady one, and now even small setbacks knock you off balance? Rebuilding resilience often starts with what you have already come through.

A Child Who Hears Mostly Criticism

Kids and teens who hear a lot about what they need to fix can start to believe it. Noticing what they do well can rebuild confidence and hope.

Unsure What Matters to You

When your days are full of obligations, it can be hard to name your values or remember what once gave you energy and a sense of purpose.

Facing Struggles on Your Own

When things get hard, you may forget the friends, family and community who would show up for you, and try to handle everything by yourself instead.

Answers to Common Questions

What if I do not feel like I have any strengths right now?

That is one of the most common reasons people start counseling, and it is okay. Strengths are often hard to see from inside a rough season. Your counselor will help you look for them in small places: how you got through a hard week, what you keep showing up for, what you would do for a friend. You do not have to bring a list.

Is strength-based therapy the same as positive thinking?

No. Positive thinking can ask you to ignore what hurts. Strength-based therapy names what is hard and also looks for the resources you have to face it. Your counselor will not push you to feel grateful or upbeat. The goal is a more accurate and more complete picture of yourself, not a cheerful one.

Does strength-based therapy work for kids and teens?

It is often a good fit. Young people hear a lot about what they need to fix, and noticing what they do well can build confidence and buy in. Parents may be asked to help spot and name strengths at home too. Ask when you reach out about counselors who work with your child's age group.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can strength-based therapy be done online?

Yes. It is built on conversation, so it works well over video. Foundations offers online counseling anywhere in Colorado, and in person sessions at our Fort Collins and Loveland offices. Let us know which you prefer when you reach out and we will factor it into your match.

Is strength-based therapy the same as solution-focused therapy?

They are related but not the same. Solution-focused brief therapy is a specific short term model that asks what is already working and what small step comes next. Strength-based therapy is a broader way of working that can sit inside many approaches, including solution focused, cognitive behavioral or family counseling. Your counselor may blend them depending on your goals.
