What is parenting counseling at Foundations?

Parenting counseling in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor at Foundations Counseling is one on one support for parents who feel stuck, worn out or at odds with a co-parent, from toddler meltdowns to teenage conflict. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

Parenting counseling is for you, the parent. If your child needs their own counselor, see child and teen counseling. If the whole household needs to work on how you get along, family counseling brings everyone into the room.

What do parents come to counseling for?

Most parents come in because something at home keeps repeating: bedtime battles, a child who melts down or shuts down, a teenager who will not talk, or yelling that leaves everyone feeling worse. Others come in for themselves, because they are exhausted, anxious about doing it wrong, or noticing patterns from their own childhood showing up in how they parent. Some come in after a big change, like a new baby, a move, a diagnosis such as ADHD, or a separation. You do not need a crisis to start.

What does parenting counseling actually look like?

Sessions are practical. Your counselor learns what a hard day looks like in your house, what you have already tried, and what you want family life to feel like. Together you work on a few specific changes, such as clearer routines, calmer ways to set limits, and responses to big emotions that do not escalate. The CDC notes that certain skills are useful in building a positive relationship and in handling children's challenging behaviors, and that young children connect through clear communication, active listening and play. Between sessions you try things at home and bring back what happened.

How can counseling help with co-parenting?

Co-parenting after separation or divorce is one of the most common reasons parents reach out. The American Academy of Pediatrics says children do better when their parents collaborate, communicate regularly and offer consistent rules across homes, and that children are more resilient and less stressed when there is less conflict between their parents. Counseling can help you keep kids out of adult disagreements, plan handoffs and holidays with less friction, and respond to a co-parent you cannot control. Co-parents can come in individually, and some choose to meet together with a counselor when that feels safe. If the separation itself is still raw, divorce recovery counseling can help too.

What if I am burned out or losing my temper?

Parental burnout is real, and it does not mean you love your kids any less. When you are running on empty, small things set off big reactions, and guilt afterward makes the next day harder. Counseling gives you room to talk honestly about it, figure out what is draining you, and practice ways to pause before you react. Some parents also work on anger or stress alongside parenting goals.

Who will I work with?

Many Foundations counselors list parenting help among the areas they work in. You can meet them in the team section on this page. When you reach out, tell us your children's ages and what is going on, and we will match you with a counselor who fits. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the fit is not right, the Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find you another counselor.

Sessions are in person at our offices in Fort Collins (Central), Fort Collins (Southeast), Loveland and Windsor, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado, which can help when childcare is hard to arrange.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

The Same Fight Every Night

Bedtime battles, homework standoffs or morning chaos can repeat day after day until everyone in the house dreads the same moments.

Yelling You Regret

Do you lose your temper and then feel guilty afterward? Many parents want calmer ways to respond when their patience runs out.

A Teen Who Will Not Talk

Closed doors, one word answers and constant conflict with your teenager can leave you worried and unsure how to reconnect.

Big Emotions, Big Meltdowns

Tantrums, shutdowns or outbursts that seem out of proportion can leave you feeling helpless about how to help your child calm down.

Exhausted and Running Out of Patience

Parenting with little sleep, little help and constant demands can leave you drained, short tempered and missing the parent you want to be.

Afraid You Are Doing It Wrong

Second guessing every decision and comparing yourself to other parents can fill you with anxiety about whether your kids will be okay.

Conflict With a Co-Parent

Disagreements over rules, schedules and handoffs after a separation can put kids in the middle and leave you frustrated by what you cannot control.

Your Own Childhood Showing Up

Are you hearing your parents' words come out of your mouth? Old patterns from how you were raised often surface when you become a parent yourself.

Adjusting to a Big Change

A new baby, a move, a blended family or learning your child has ADHD can shake up routines and leave you searching for a new way forward.

Answers to Common Questions

Does my child need to come to parenting sessions?

Usually not. Parenting counseling is focused on you, so most sessions are with one or both parents. That can be a relief when a child is not ready for counseling or the problem is mostly about how the adults respond. If your counselor thinks your child would benefit from their own support, they will talk with you about child and teen or family counseling.

Can co-parents who do not get along come in together?

Sometimes. If both parents are willing and it feels safe, a joint session can help you agree on routines, handoffs and how to talk about each other in front of the kids. If there is abuse, intimidation or a protective order, joint sessions are not appropriate, and your counselor will work with you individually instead.

Is parenting counseling only for parents of young kids?

No. Parents come in at every stage: new parents adjusting to a baby, parents of school age kids with behavior struggles, parents of teens facing conflict or withdrawal, and parents of young adults working out a new kind of relationship. Your counselor tailors the work to your child's age and what is happening in your family right now.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

How long does parenting counseling usually take?

It varies. Some parents come for a handful of sessions to work on one specific issue, like bedtime or screen time battles, and check back later. Others want steadier support through a longer season, such as a divorce or a teenager's hard year. Your counselor will set goals with you and check in about progress as you go.

Can stepparents and blended families get support?

Yes. Stepparents often feel stuck between wanting to help and not having the authority or relationship to set limits yet. Counseling can help you and your partner agree on roles, support each other in front of the kids, and give relationships with stepchildren time to grow. Family counseling is also available when the whole household wants to work on it.

Can parenting counseling be done online?

Yes. Foundations offers secure online sessions anywhere in Colorado, which many parents find easier to fit around naps, school pickups and work. In person sessions are available in Fort Collins, Loveland and Windsor. Co-parents in different homes can each join online when a joint session makes sense and feels safe, and you can switch formats as your schedule changes.
