What does biofeedback mean in counseling at Foundations?

Biofeedback informed counseling in Loveland at Foundations Counseling is talk therapy that uses breathing, body awareness and ideas from biofeedback, such as heart rate variability, to help people notice and settle their stress response. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What is biofeedback?

The Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback defines biofeedback as a process that lets a person learn how to change physiological activity to improve health and performance. In clinical biofeedback, according to Mayo Clinic, sensors track signals such as heart rate, breathing and muscle tension and show them back to you, so you can practice changing them.

How do biofeedback ideas show up in counseling here?

Some Foundations counselors bring these ideas into ordinary talk therapy. That can look like learning to notice early body signals of stress, such as a tight jaw or quick shallow breathing, and practicing slower breathing until it feels natural. It can also mean understanding heart rate variability as a concept: your heart rate is meant to rise and fall a little from moment to moment, and calm, steady breathing is one way people work with their stress response. Whether any device or app is part of your sessions depends on the counselor, so ask when you reach out what your counselor uses.

What can this kind of body based work help with?

People often look for it when stress shows up physically: a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or worry that will not switch off. At Foundations it is usually part of counseling for anxiety, stress management or sleep problems. Cleveland Clinic lists anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain among the concerns biofeedback is used for, and also notes that providers rarely use it as the only treatment. Here it sits inside talk therapy, alongside understanding what is causing the stress.

Is this the same as clinical biofeedback treatment?

No. This page describes counseling that draws on biofeedback concepts. Clinical biofeedback with sensors and monitoring is a separate service, often used for medical concerns such as headaches, blood pressure or pelvic floor problems. If that is what you need, ask your physician for a referral, or look for a biofeedback provider through the AAPB.

Who will I work with?

Some Foundations counselors include breathing, body awareness and biofeedback ideas in their work. A smaller number of Foundations counselors offer this, so tell us what you are looking for when you reach out and we will match you with one of them. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will help you find another counselor who fits.

In person sessions for this work are at our Loveland office, and online counseling is available anywhere in Colorado.

Safety and what this page does not cover

If you are thinking about suicide or are in crisis, call or text 988, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Foundations provides outpatient talk therapy. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. New or unexplained physical symptoms, such as chest pain, fainting or changes in heart rhythm, belong with a physician first, even if stress might be part of the picture.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Stress You Feel in Your Body

Tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, headaches or an upset stomach can be signs that stress has settled into your body, even when your mind says you are fine.

Racing Heart and Shallow Breaths

Does your heart pound or your breath get quick and shallow before a meeting, a hard conversation or sometimes for no clear reason at all?

Always on Edge

Your body seems stuck on high alert, startling easily, unable to sit still and slow to settle down even after the stressful moment has passed.

Trouble Winding Down at Night

You lie awake with a busy mind and a restless body, and it feels impossible to switch off after a long, tense day.

Muscle Tension That Lingers

Ongoing tightness in your neck, back or shoulders can be one way the body holds onto stress, and over time it can wear on your mood and energy.

Missing Your Body's Early Signals

Do you only notice how stressed you are once you are already exhausted, irritable or getting a headache? Learning earlier signals can give you more room to respond.

Anxiety That Feels Physical

For some people anxiety shows up less as worried thoughts and more as tightness, trembling or a churning stomach that seems to arrive out of nowhere.

Wanting Calm You Can Carry

You want simple, practical ways to settle your stress response that you can use at your desk, in the car or right before a hard conversation.

Stress Affecting Your Focus

When your body is tense and keyed up, it can be hard to concentrate at work or school, remember details or stay patient with the people around you.

Answers to Common Questions

Do I need any equipment or an app to practice at home?

Usually not. Most of what you practice, such as noticing body signals and slowing your breathing, needs nothing but a few quiet minutes. Some people like using a heart rate app or wearable to see changes, and your counselor can talk through whether that might help you. Ask when you reach out what your counselor uses so you know what to expect.

Will sessions only be breathing exercises?

No. Breathing and body awareness are tools, not the whole session. Most of your time is still talk therapy: understanding what is driving the stress, what keeps it going, and what you want to change. Body based practice is woven in when it helps, for example before talking about something hard, or as a skill to use between sessions.

Can biofeedback informed counseling be done online?

Yes, much of it. Breathing practice, body awareness and talking through stress all work well over secure video, and online sessions are available anywhere in Colorado. If you would like to practice in the same room as your counselor, in person sessions are available in Loveland. You can start one way and switch later.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Is biofeedback informed counseling helpful if my stress feels mostly physical?

It can be a good fit, because it starts with what you notice in your body. Your counselor will also encourage you to rule out medical causes with your physician, especially for new or changing symptoms. Once that is done, learning how stress and the body affect each other often makes physical stress feel more understandable and manageable.
