What is gestalt therapy at Foundations?

Gestalt therapy in Fort Collins at Foundations Counseling helps people notice what they are feeling, thinking and doing right now, in the room, so old patterns and unfinished business become clearer and easier to change. It is talk therapy, private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What is gestalt therapy?

Gestalt is a German word for a whole, a pattern seen all at once rather than in pieces. A clinical review on the NIH bookshelf describes gestalt therapy as an approach that concentrates on immediate experience in the present moment and emphasizes personal responsibility. It was developed in the 1940s by Fritz and Laura Perls. Instead of only analyzing a problem from a distance, you and your counselor look at how it shows up in you right now: in your words, your body, your tone and your choices.

Why does gestalt therapy focus on the present?

Because the past tends to live in the present. An old hurt can show up as a tight chest when someone raises their voice, or a habit of saying yes when you mean no. Gestalt therapy slows those moments down so you can notice them as they happen. The relationship with your counselor matters a lot here, since it is a real, live place to practice saying what you feel and asking for what you need.

What is the empty chair technique?

It is one of the most familiar gestalt experiments. You speak to an empty chair as if a person, or a part of yourself, were sitting in it, and sometimes you switch chairs and answer back. It is often used for unfinished business, such as words never said to someone who has died or a conflict that still stings. It can feel awkward at first, and it is always optional. Your counselor will suggest experiments like this only when they fit, and you can say no.

Who might gestalt therapy suit?

It often appeals to people who understand their problems in their head but still feel stuck, or who feel cut off from their emotions. At Foundations it can be part of individual counseling, grief counseling or work on self esteem. As the National Institute of Mental Health puts it, it is important to feel comfortable with your therapist, so the fit with your counselor matters as much as the method.

Who will I work with?

Some Foundations counselors use gestalt therapy as part of how they work. A smaller number of Foundations counselors offer this, so tell us what you are looking for when you reach out and we will match you with one of them. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will help you find another counselor who fits.

In person sessions for this work are at our Fort Collins (Southeast) office, and online counseling is available anywhere in Colorado.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Unfinished Business

Words you never got to say to a parent, partner or friend can keep replaying in your mind, long after the chance to say them seems to have passed.

Disconnected From Your Feelings

Do you often know what you think but not what you feel? Many people learn to live in their heads and lose touch with what is happening inside.

Saying Yes When You Mean No

You agree to things you do not want, swallow your opinions or keep the peace to avoid conflict, then feel resentful or drained afterward.

Your Body Reacting First

A tight chest when someone raises their voice or a knot in your stomach at certain names can be a sign the past is still living in the present.

Torn Between Two Parts of You

One part of you wants to stay and another wants to go, or one wants to speak up while another wants to hide, and the tug of war wears you out.

Going Through the Motions

Your days blur together on autopilot. You are there in body but not really present, and life starts to feel flat or far away.

Hard to Name Your Needs

Does naming your needs feel selfish, risky or awkward? You may drop hints and hope others notice, then feel hurt when they do not.

Stuck Analyzing the Same Problem

You have looked at a problem from every angle and can explain it well, yet understanding it has not changed how you feel or what you do.

Wanting to Feel More Alive

You long to feel more present, honest and engaged in your own life, instead of watching it from a careful distance and holding parts of yourself back.

Answers to Common Questions

Is gestalt therapy the same as gestalt psychology?

They are related but different. Gestalt psychology is an older theory about how people perceive things as whole patterns. Gestalt therapy borrowed that idea of the whole and applied it to people, looking at thoughts, feelings, body and surroundings together. You do not need to know any theory to benefit; your counselor will explain things in plain words as you go.

Does gestalt therapy ignore the past?

No. Gestalt therapy takes the past seriously, but it works with the past as it shows up today: a reaction, a belief, a feeling in your body. You can talk about history, and your counselor may ask what you notice while you talk about it. The goal is less about retelling the story and more about changing how it affects you now.

Will I have to do role plays or experiments?

Only if you want to. Gestalt counselors sometimes suggest small experiments, such as saying a sentence out loud, noticing your posture, or talking to an empty chair. These are invitations, not requirements. Many sessions are simply conversation. If an experiment feels uncomfortable, saying so is useful information, and your counselor will adjust.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can gestalt therapy be done online?

Yes. Present moment awareness and conversation translate well to secure video, and online sessions are available anywhere in Colorado. Some experiments, such as switching chairs, are easier in person, so some people prefer our Fort Collins office for that reason. You can start in either format and change later if the other suits you better.

How long does gestalt therapy usually take?

There is no set number of sessions. Some people come for a few months to work through one pattern or unfinished conversation, while others use gestalt therapy longer for deeper work on how they relate to themselves and others. Your counselor checks in with you about what is changing and whether the pace fits, and you decide when you are ready to stop.
