What is psychodynamic therapy at Foundations?

Psychodynamic therapy in Fort Collins at Foundations Counseling helps people who keep running into the same feelings, relationship patterns or choices understand where those patterns come from, by talking openly about past and present experiences. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What is psychodynamic therapy?

Psychodynamic therapy is a form of talk therapy. Cleveland Clinic describes it as therapy where you explore your past thoughts, feelings and memories and work on bringing hidden or unconscious thoughts into your awareness. The idea is simple: much of what drives how we feel and react sits just below the surface, shaped by earlier relationships and experiences. When those patterns become visible, you have more choice about what to do with them.

How is psychodynamic therapy different from CBT?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) mostly works on the present: noticing unhelpful thoughts and practicing new behaviors, often with skills and homework. Psychodynamic therapy spends more time on the why. It asks where a reaction first made sense, what it protects you from, and how it keeps showing up in work, family and love. Neither approach is better for everyone, and many counselors blend practical skills with deeper exploration.

What happens in a psychodynamic session?

Sessions are open ended conversations. You are invited to say what is on your mind, even when it seems unrelated, and your counselor listens for themes: a feeling that keeps returning, a type of person you keep choosing, a moment when you go quiet. Your counselor may gently point out a pattern, including one that shows up in the relationship between the two of you, because that is often where old patterns are easiest to see and safest to change. You set the pace, and you never have to share something before you are ready.

What can psychodynamic therapy help with?

People often look for psychodynamic therapy when symptom relief alone has not been enough, or when they want to understand themselves more deeply. Cleveland Clinic lists anxiety, depression, trauma, attachment difficulties and coping with chronic illness among the concerns it is used for. At Foundations that can mean working on anxiety, depression or long standing relationship patterns through individual counseling.

Who will I work with?

Some Foundations counselors use psychodynamic therapy as part of how they work. A smaller number of Foundations counselors offer this, so tell us what you are looking for when you reach out and we will match you with one of them. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will help you find another counselor who fits.

In person sessions for this work are at our Fort Collins (Central) office, and online counseling is available anywhere in Colorado.

Safety and what this page does not cover

If you are thinking about suicide or are in crisis, call or text 988, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Foundations provides outpatient talk therapy, usually weekly. It is not crisis care, psychiatric care or medication management. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that psychotherapy can be used alongside medication, so if you are wondering about medication, talk with your physician.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Repeating the Same Patterns

Do you keep ending up in similar relationships, conflicts or choices, even when you promised yourself this time would be different? Understanding why can open new options.

Reactions That Feel Too Big

A small comment or a slight change in tone can set off anger, hurt or panic that seems out of proportion, and you are not sure where it comes from.

Old Wounds Shaping Today

Experiences from childhood or past relationships can quietly influence how you trust, love and handle conflict, long after you thought you had moved on.

Stuck Without Knowing Why

Something keeps holding you back at work or in love, yet when you try to explain it, the reasons stay just out of reach.

Relationships That End Badly

Partners, friends or coworkers seem to drift away or blow up in familiar ways, leaving you wondering what part you play and how to change it.

A Vague Sense of Unhappiness

Your life may look fine from the outside, yet a quiet heaviness or emptiness lingers that is hard to name and even harder to shake.

Hard to Let People Close

Do you keep others at arm's length or pull away when things start to feel serious? Exploring what closeness stirs up can make connection feel safer.

Wanting More Than Quick Fixes

Coping skills have helped a little, but you want to understand yourself more deeply so the change feels lasting rather than surface level.

Family Roles That Linger

The roles you played growing up, such as peacemaker, caretaker or the one who never needed anything, may still shape how you act as an adult.

Answers to Common Questions

Do I have to talk about my childhood in psychodynamic therapy?

No. Childhood often comes up because early relationships shape how we cope, but you decide what to share and when. Many people start with what is hard right now, such as a conflict at work or a relationship that keeps ending the same way, and the connections to the past appear naturally over time. Your counselor follows your lead rather than digging for memories.

How long does psychodynamic therapy usually last?

It varies. Some people come for a focused stretch of a few months to work on one pattern, while others stay longer because they want deeper, lasting change. There is no set number of sessions. You and your counselor review how things are going along the way and decide together whether to continue, change focus or wrap up.

Is psychodynamic therapy the same as psychoanalysis?

Not quite. Psychodynamic therapy grew out of psychoanalytic ideas, but traditional psychoanalysis usually meets several times a week over years. Psychodynamic therapy at Foundations is typically weekly, face to face or online, and more focused on what you want to change. It keeps the core idea that understanding hidden patterns gives you more freedom to choose how you respond.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can psychodynamic therapy be done online?

Yes. Psychodynamic therapy is a conversation, so it works well through secure video for many people. Online sessions are available anywhere in Colorado. Some people prefer meeting in person in Fort Collins because sitting in the same room helps them settle into deeper conversations. You can try either format and switch if one feels better.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence based?

Yes. Research reviews, including a widely cited 2010 paper by Jonathan Shedler in American Psychologist, found that psychodynamic therapy produces benefits comparable to other evidence based therapies, and that gains often continue to grow after therapy ends. It has support for depression, anxiety and long standing relationship patterns. As with any therapy, the fit between you and your counselor matters as much as the method.
