What is existential therapy?

Cleveland Clinic describes existential therapy as a form of psychotherapy that uses theories and practices of philosophy to address the challenges of being human. Rather than looking only at symptoms, it looks at the larger questions that sit underneath them: what gives your life meaning, how you face uncertainty and loss, and how you want to use the choices you have. It is less about fixing you and more about helping you live with more honesty and intention.

What questions does existential therapy work with?

Cleveland Clinic outlines four themes that often shape the work:

  • Death: facing mortality so that fear has less hold over how you live now
  • Freedom and responsibility: recognizing that your choices shape your path, and owning them
  • Isolation: the parts of life no one else can live for you, and how to stay connected anyway
  • Meaning: identifying what gives you purpose and what feels fulfilling

For most people these are not abstract. They show up as a restless feeling that something is missing, dread that will not settle after a health scare, or a quiet question about whether the life you built is the one you want.

Who might want existential therapy?

People often look for it when practical advice is not enough: after a death or a diagnosis, in midlife or retirement, after a divorce or a career change, when success feels hollow, or when low mood seems tied to questions about purpose. Cleveland Clinic lists anxiety, depression and living with chronic conditions among the concerns it may help with. It can sit alongside counseling for depression, anxiety or grief.

What is a session like?

Sessions are conversations, not lectures on philosophy. Your counselor asks questions, listens closely, and helps you notice the beliefs and choices shaping your days. You might talk about values, regrets, fears and hopes, then try small changes between sessions. The work can be uncomfortable at times. Cleveland Clinic notes that it can bring up painful memories and difficult topics, and that some of its ideas may not fit everyone's religious beliefs. Your counselor paces the work with you, and the National Institute of Mental Health notes that rapport and trust are essential, so how you feel with your counselor matters.

Who will I work with?

Existential therapy is offered by a smaller number of Foundations counselors. Tell us what you are looking for when you reach out by calling 970.227.2770 or booking online, and we will match you with one of them. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will find another counselor who is.

Sessions are in person at our Loveland office, or through online counseling anywhere in Colorado.

What existential therapy does not cover

Existential therapy is outpatient talk therapy. It is not crisis care and does not replace medical care; questions about medication belong with your physician. If thoughts about death have turned into thoughts of ending your life, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Searching for Meaning

Do you find yourself asking what the point of it all is? Feeling unsure about your purpose can leave even the good days feeling a little hollow.

A Restless Sense of Emptiness

Life may look full on paper, yet something feels missing, and staying busy no longer covers the quiet sense that you are drifting.

Facing Your Own Mortality

A health scare, the death of someone close or a milestone birthday can bring thoughts of your own mortality into sharp and unsettling focus.

Grief That Shakes Your World

Loss can do more than make you sad. It can unsettle what you believed about fairness, the future and what matters most in your life.

Overwhelmed by Big Choices

Having many paths open can feel paralyzing. You may fear picking the wrong one and living with regret, so you avoid choosing at all.

Alone Even Among Others

You may feel that no one fully understands what it is like to be you, even when you are surrounded by friends, family or coworkers.

Life Changes That Raise Questions

Retirement, an empty nest, a divorce or a career shift can leave you wondering who you are now and what you want the next chapter to hold.

Living by Someone Else's Script

Are you following a path chosen by family, culture or habit rather than your own values? Counseling offers space to ask what you truly want.

Doubts About What You Believed

Questioning beliefs you once held, or where your life is headed, can feel lonely and unsettling. It is natural to wonder, and it can help to talk it through.

Answers to Common Questions

Is existential therapy depressing?

Usually the opposite. Talking openly about death, loss or meaninglessness can sound heavy, but many people find it a relief to name what they have been carrying alone. The aim is not to dwell in dark places. It is to understand what matters to you so you can make choices that feel more like your own.

Do I need to know philosophy to try existential therapy?

No. You do not need to have read any philosophy or use special vocabulary. Your counselor draws on those ideas in the background and speaks in plain language about your actual life: your relationships, work, losses and hopes. If you enjoy the philosophical side, you can talk about it, but it is never required.

How is existential therapy different from CBT?

Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on spotting and changing specific unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, often with structured exercises. Existential therapy is more open ended and looks at the bigger questions behind your distress, such as meaning and choice. They are not rivals; some people benefit from both, and your counselor can talk with you about which fits your goals.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can existential therapy work with my religious faith?

It can, as long as it feels respectful to you. Existential therapy explores meaning on your terms and does not require you to give up any belief. Some people find its questions fit naturally with their faith; others find them unsettling. If you want counseling that integrates Christian faith directly, see our Christian counseling page instead.

How long does existential therapy usually take?

It varies. Some people come for a handful of sessions to think through one decision or loss. Others stay longer because the questions they are exploring run deep. You and your counselor set goals together early on and check in regularly about whether the work is still helping and how often you want to meet.
