What is motivational interviewing at Foundations?

Motivational interviewing in Windsor at Foundations Counseling is a counseling style for people who feel two ways about a change, such as drinking less or making a hard decision. Your counselor helps you find your own reasons without lecturing. It is private pay, about $200 per session, with a free consultation and a first appointment usually within 48 hours.

What is motivational interviewing?

A federal treatment guide from SAMHSA, published on the NIH bookshelf, defines motivational interviewing as a person centered counseling style for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about change. It rests on four ideas: partnership, where you and your counselor work as collaborators; acceptance, where your view is respected even when your counselor sees things differently; compassion, where your wellbeing comes first; and evocation, drawing out the reasons, values and strengths you already have.

Why do I feel two ways about changing?

Because almost every real change costs something. Part of you wants to drink less, spend less or set a boundary, and part of you remembers what that habit does for you. That push and pull is normal, not a sign of weakness or denial. The same SAMHSA guidance treats motivation as a dynamic and changeable state rather than a fixed trait, which means it can grow with the right conversation.

What does a motivational interviewing session feel like?

Less like being told what to do and more like thinking out loud with someone who is on your side. Your counselor asks open questions, reflects back what they hear, and notices when you start talking about why change might matter to you. They deliberately avoid arguing or pushing, because pressure tends to make people defend the habit. When you are ready, you build a plan in your own words, with steps small enough to try this week.

What can motivational interviewing help with?

It is widely used with alcohol and drug use, and the SAMHSA guide notes benefits across a wide range of other behavior change goals too. At Foundations it often supports drug and alcohol counseling, gambling concerns, health habits, and big decisions you keep putting off. It also fits well with other approaches such as CBT, so your counselor may shift from exploring why to practicing how.

Who will I work with?

Some Foundations counselors use motivational interviewing as a core part of their work. A smaller number of Foundations counselors offer this, so tell us what you are looking for when you reach out and we will match you with one of them. Your first meeting with that counselor is a free consultation. If the match does not feel right, our Counselor Match Guarantee means we will help you find another counselor who fits.

In person sessions for this work are at our Windsor office, and online counseling is available anywhere in Colorado.

Safety and what this page does not cover

If you are thinking about suicide or are in crisis, call or text 988, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Foundations offers one on one outpatient talk therapy. It does not provide detox, medically supervised withdrawal, medication for addiction or residential treatment. If you drink heavily or use substances daily, talk with a physician before stopping, since some people need medical support to stop safely. For help finding that level of care, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free and confidential at 1.800.662.4357.

Do You Feel...

What brings people to counseling rarely arrives as one clear moment. More often it builds quietly: a feeling that lingers, a pattern that keeps repeating, a sense that something is off. If any of these sound familiar, reaching out to Foundations is a simple first step.

Feeling Two Ways About Change

Part of you wants things to be different, and part of you is not ready to give up what the habit does for you. That push and pull is normal.

Worried About Your Drinking

Are you drinking more than you meant to, or noticing it affect your sleep, mood or relationships? You can explore it honestly without being told what to do.

Tired of Being Lectured

Advice, warnings and ultimatums from others may only make you dig in harder. Counseling offers a conversation where your view is respected and your choices stay yours.

Stuck on a Hard Decision

Whether it is leaving a job, ending a relationship or making a move, weighing both sides over and over can leave you exhausted and no closer to deciding.

Starting and Stopping Again

You have tried to cut back, quit or start something healthier before, and it lasted a few days or weeks. Starting over again can feel discouraging.

Pressure From People Who Care

A partner, parent or friend is worried about one of your habits, and the tension at home keeps building even if you are not sure they are right.

Habits That Cost More Now

Spending, gaming, vaping or other routines that once felt harmless may now be costing you more money, time or peace of mind than you would like.

Unsure Change Is Worth It

Do you wonder whether the effort would really pay off? Talking through what matters most to you can help your own reasons for change come into focus.

Losing Faith in Your Willpower

After a few attempts that did not stick, it is easy to decide you just lack discipline. Motivation often grows with the right conversation rather than more self-criticism.

Answers to Common Questions

Will my counselor tell me I have to quit drinking?

No. In motivational interviewing your counselor does not decide your goal for you. Some people choose to stop, some choose to cut back, and some want to understand their drinking before deciding anything. Your counselor will be honest about concerns, including safety, but the choice and the plan stay yours, which is a big part of why the approach works for people who dislike being lectured.

Do I need to be ready to change before I start counseling?

No. Motivational interviewing was built for people who are not sure yet. You can come in feeling stuck, defensive or simply curious. The early sessions often focus on understanding what the habit does for you and what it costs, without any pressure to act. Many people find that readiness grows once they can talk about both sides honestly.

How many sessions of motivational interviewing does it take?

There is no fixed number. Motivational interviewing can be brief, sometimes only a few conversations to get unstuck on a single decision. When it is part of ongoing counseling for substance use or a long standing habit, it usually continues alongside other approaches for longer. You and your counselor check progress together and adjust the plan as you go.

What are the costs associated with counseling or therapy sessions at Foundations?

At Foundations, each counseling or therapy session is $200. Your first consultation is always free, and you are able to meet with as many counselors as you need until you find the perfect match.

Does Foundations accept Insurance?

No. Foundations is private pay and does not bill insurance companies. If your plan has out of network benefits, we can give you documentation to submit for possible reimbursement, so check with your plan first. Paying privately keeps your counseling out of insurance records, avoids a required diagnosis, and lets you choose your counselor and how long your sessions last.

What if I need to reschedule my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.

Are you available in the evenings or on weekends?

Yes. Foundations offers early morning, daytime, evening and Saturday appointments, and online sessions can add flexibility. Call 970.227.2770 or book online, tell us what times work for you, and we will match you with a counselor whose schedule fits.

Can motivational interviewing help a family member who refuses help?

It cannot make someone change, but it can help you. Many partners and parents start individual counseling to learn how to talk about a loved one's drinking or habit without arguing, which often lowers defensiveness at home. If your family member later decides to come in, they can be matched with their own counselor.

Can I do motivational interviewing online?

Yes. Motivational interviewing is a conversation based approach, so it works well over video. Foundations offers online counseling anywhere in Colorado, and you can also meet in person at our Windsor office. Online sessions can make it easier to keep going during a busy stretch. Share your preference when you reach out and we will factor it into your match.
